Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a PCU/Medical Unit position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU experience and Epic proficiency.

Details

  • 36-48 bed medical unit (flex with semi-private rooms) in a hospital setting
  • Mixed acuity unit serving Med/Surg to Intermediate Care (IMC) level patients, as well as long-length-of-stay patients — approximately 90% Med/Surg and 10% IMC
  • Common diagnoses include DKA, pre/post-surgical care, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injury, minor fractures, DVTs, and CVA overflow
  • Nurses administer oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feeding, and blood product transfusions
  • Line management includes peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access; tube/drain management includes chest tubes, NGTs, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
  • Telemetry monitoring is performed — nurses read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Patient ratios vary by acuity: Long-length-of-stay Med/Surg (no tele) 1:5–6; Med/Surg Telemetry (no IMC drips) 1:5; Intermediate Care 1:4
  • 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
  • 6-week scheduling cycles; weekend rotation of up to 4 out of 6 weekends, which may include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
  • No mandatory on-call requirement
  • Charting system: Epic (required); medication dispensing: Omnicell; IV pump: Alaris
  • Floating required in rotation with other travelers to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation — within scope of practice

Requirements

  • Active RN license — SD state or compact license required
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
  • Minimum 1 year of PCU RN experience required
  • Epic EMR experience required (mandatory for first-time travelers)
  • Proficiency with drip titration, including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed (up to 5 mcg), and occasionally Esmolol or other beta-blockers/antihypertensives
  • Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patients; ability to read and interpret cardiac strips
  • Comfort with Med/Surg assignments required — candidates who are not comfortable should not apply
  • Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
  • Two references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), a non-patient-carrying charge nurse, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, and hospitalist coverage
  • Orientation consists of two days of facility/unit onboarding (policies, protocols, online learning, and classroom time with the Nursing Professional Development Team) followed by two precepted shifts on the unit
  • May be expected to precept nursing students
  • Monthly audits for pre/post pain scoring — must maintain 90% compliance
  • Navy blue scrubs required
  • Free parking available on-site
  • RTO requests during winter holidays require manager approval; no RTO is approved during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally blackout period (approximately August 1–18)
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they have at least 1 year of experience and Epic proficiency
  • Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
