Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position at a community hospital in New Mexico, requiring 5 years of ED experience and a comprehensive certification package including TNCC and NRP.

Details

  • Work in the Emergency Department of an acute care community hospital currently pursuing Level IV Trauma designation
  • 5-bed ED with 2 trauma bays, seeing 40–50 patients per day
  • 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Patient population ranges from minor injuries to major traumas, including crush injuries, burns, and amputations common to a nearby oil field community; also sees STEMIs and strokes prior to transfer
  • STEMIs and strokes are stabilized and transferred out to higher-level facilities
  • No fast track; a separate walk-in family practice clinic handles lower-acuity patients
  • 1 dedicated triage nurse with 2 triage rooms
  • 1 ED physician on-site 24/7; House Supervisor available in-house 24/7
  • Security on-site 24/7 with 2 officers per shift and police available as needed
  • ED Techs (CNAs) support RNs with secretarial duties, vital signs, ADLs, and I/Os
  • RT is dedicated to the ED during day shifts; at night, RT covers the whole hospital — RNs are expected to manage respiratory equipment, administer respiratory treatments, and perform 12-lead EKGs
  • RNs are required to independently read and interpret telemetry and EKGs
  • X-ray and CT available 24/7; ultrasound, interventional radiology, and MRI also available; portables available with RN transport assistance
  • Phlebotomy is available, but RNs may draw labs when needed
  • Night shift, 12-hour shifts (7p–7a)
  • Every other weekend required
  • May be included in holiday rotation
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • No floating required
  • Charting system: TruBridge Evident

Requirements

  • Active NM or Compact RN license required
  • Current certifications required: BLS (AHA), ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, NRP, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 5 years of ED experience required
  • Trauma Level I or II ED experience accepted
  • Must be proficient in mixing and titrating critical drips (e.g., Amiodarone, Cardizem, Epinephrine, Insulin)
  • Must demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently

Additional Information

  • Administer and titrate critical IV drips independently
  • Read and interpret cardiac monitor strips and 12-lead EKGs
  • Manage respiratory equipment and perform respiratory treatments when RT is not dedicated to the ED
  • Assist with EMS coordination and ED throughput and flow; travelers are not expected to serve as charge nurse
  • 1–2 day preceptored orientation based on individual needs
  • Pre-assignment online modules (~20 hours) must be completed before starting on the floor; instructions will be emailed prior to the start of the assignment
  • Scheduling is flexible and not block-based; travelers are expected to fill gaps in the permanent staff schedule, though the manager will make reasonable efforts to accommodate preferences
  • Scrub color: Navy blue; jackets are permitted but must be hoodless
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
