Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neurosurgery ICU position at a Level 1 Trauma, Magnet-designated teaching hospital, requiring at least 2 years of adult ICU experience and Epic proficiency.
Details
- 29-bed Neurosurgery ICU within a large, 874-bed Level 1 Trauma and Magnet-designated academic teaching hospital
- Patient population includes ischemic and hemorrhagic strokes, subarachnoid hemorrhage, TBI, seizures/status epilepticus, spinal cord injuries, post-op craniotomies (direct from OR), IR patients (direct from procedure), and TNK administration
- Approximately 50% of TNK administrations are performed on the unit rather than in the ED
- Some off-service Trauma and Medical ICU patients are seen on the unit
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:2, with occasional tripling for patients with downgrade orders
- CNAs are not consistently staffed on this unit; nurses are responsible for phlebotomy draws
- EMR: Epic (experience required)
- Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, Philips monitors, Arctic Sun (TTM), Vigilance Monitor, CRRT, and ICP/EVD monitoring systems
- 12-hour night shifts, 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM (check-in 6:45 PM, check-out 7:15 AM), 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, Sunday)
- No on-call requirements
- Floating may be required to other adult critical care units (MICU, STICU, Dixon Heart, CTICU) and PCU at a max 1:3 ratio
- Schedules are posted on a 6-week cycle
Requirements
- Active NC or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 2 years of adult ICU experience required, with most recent experience within the last year
- Epic EMR experience required
- Proficiency in EVD management, ICP monitoring, ventilator management, vasoactive drip management, tracheostomy care, central line maintenance, and post-procedure TNK and IR patient monitoring
- Candidates must have completed at least one prior 13-week travel assignment (first-time travelers not accepted)
- Must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Last 4 digits of SSN and full date of birth required for consideration
- Minimum of one professional reference dated within the past year, from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include management of complex neurocritical care patients including EVD drains, ICP monitoring, post-op craniotomies, and TNK administration; CRRT patients may be assigned to travelers who demonstrate competency
- Support team includes a supervisor, stroke response nurse, clinical educator, free-floating charge nurse, 24/7 RT and intensivist coverage, an in-house NP/PA as part of the Neurocritical Care Team, PT/OT/ST 7 days a week, and case management/social work
- Pharmacy support is shared after 11:00 PM
- Orientation includes facility NEO and approximately 2 days of departmental orientation, adjusted based on individual skillset and comfort level
- Travelers are expected to work 75% of assigned holidays
- RTO requires manager approval
- Scrub color: Navy Blue
- Free parking is available on-site
- Unit culture is described as teamwork-oriented and retention-focused
- A clinical interview with the unit manager is required
- Candidates who have previously worked a permanent position at an Advocate Health Southeast (AHSE) facility must have been separated for at least 1 year to be eligible
