Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position at a community hospital in Artesia, NM, requiring 5 years of ED experience and multiple critical care certifications.
Details
- Acute care community hospital emergency department setting, currently pursuing Level IV Trauma designation
- ER with 5 beds and 2 trauma bays; no fast track — a walk-in family practice clinic attached to the hospital manages lower-acuity patients
- Dedicated triage area with 1 triage nurse and 2 triage rooms
- Patient volume averages 40–50 patients per day with a 1:3 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Common cases include minor injuries, major traumas, crush injuries, burns, amputations (due to proximity to oil fields), STEMIs, and strokes — STEMIs and strokes are transferred out
- Must be able to mix and titrate critical drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Epinephrine, and Insulin
- RNs are required to read and interpret telemetry and 12-lead EKGs independently
- RNs manage respiratory equipment and administer respiratory treatments; RT is dedicated to the ED during day shift and covers the whole hospital at night
- X-ray, CT, ultrasound, and MRI imaging available 24/7; portable imaging available; RNs assist with patient transport
- Phlebotomy is available, though RNs may draw labs when needed
- 12-hour day shifts (7a–7p)
- Every other weekend required
- No call or on-call requirement
- No floating required
- Charting system: TruBridge (Evident)
Requirements
- Active NM or Compact RN license required
- Required certifications: BLS (AHA), ACLS, PALS, TNCC, ENPC, NRP, and NIHSS
- Minimum 5 years of ED experience required; Level I or II trauma center ED experience accepted
- Must be able to mix and titrate critical drips independently
- Must demonstrate strong critical thinking skills and the ability to work independently
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- Small community hospital with significantly more capabilities than typical for its size
- 1 ED physician on staff 24/7; House Supervisor available in-house 24/7
- One of two ED RNs per shift will serve as charge nurse — travelers are not asked to fill this role
- ED Techs (CNAs) on staff handle secretarial duties, vital signs, ADLs, and I/Os
- Security is in-house 24/7 with 2 security personnel per shift; law enforcement available as needed
- 1–2 days of preceptor-based orientation provided depending on individual needs
- Online modules (~20 hours) must be completed prior to working the floor; instructions are emailed before the assignment begins
- Scheduling is flexible but travelers are expected to help fill gaps in the permanent staff schedule — block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Holiday rotation participation may be required
- Navy blue scrubs required; jackets without hoods are permitted
