Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and cardiac drip titration skills.

Details

• 56-bed Progressive Care Unit within an inpatient hospital setting
• Adult patient population with a wide variety of diagnoses including CHF, acute respiratory failure, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
• RN patient ratio of 1:4 on the PCU/Telemetry unit (days and nights)
• 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
• Weekend rotation required — every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
• Every other holiday minimum is expected during the contracted timeframe
• Floating required within adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (based on experience), and Observation — in rotation with other travelers
• Epic EMR experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience may require manager approval
• Alaris and Omnicell systems in use
• Centralized telemetry monitoring available 24/7 for telemetry reading and alarm notifications

Requirements

• Active RN license for South Dakota (SD state license or Compact license) currently in hand
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
• Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
• Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills required
• Proficiency in cardiac and vasoactive drip titration required — including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and Levophed (up to 5 mcg); occasional Esmolol or other beta-blocker/antihypertensive drips (training available if needed)
• Skills required: IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion and management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance
• Strong verbal and written communication, thorough physical assessment, and sound clinical judgment
• Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
• 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
• DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

• Provide comprehensive PCU-level nursing care to a complex adult patient population
• Charge nurse coverage provided 24/7 with two free-floating charge nurses assigned to the unit
• Additional unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), a flex resource nurse, phlebotomy (24/7 for peripheral draws), respiratory therapy (24/7), and hospitalist physicians in-house 24/7
• Providers are contacted via paging system and secure chat
• Orientation consists of 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour preceptored shifts
• All travelers are required to attend shift huddles prior to shift start (0625 for nights, 1825 for evenings) in the 7th floor conference room
• Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring — 90% compliance is required
• RN scrub color is navy blue
• May occasionally be expected to precept nursing students
• RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; no RTO is permitted during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
• First-time travelers are considered if they have more than 2 years of RN experience
• Former permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
