Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Family Birthing Center (L&D/Mother-Baby) position in California, requiring at least 1 year of LDRP experience and active AWHONN Advanced EFM certification.

Details

  • Acute care hospital setting in a Family Birthing Center with LDRP configuration
  • Unit layout includes 2 OB triage/OBED beds, 7 LDRP beds, 4-8 overflow postpartum beds, 1 OR suite for C-sections, and a 2-bed NICU for newborn stabilization
  • Averages 70-80 births per month and 60-70 NST antepartum tests per month
  • Patient population includes patients 35 weeks and above; may include twin deliveries; patients under 35 weeks are transferred to a higher level of care
  • Staffing ratios: 1:2 in labor, 1:1 at delivery, 1:4 for Mother/Baby couplets
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including Pitocin and occasionally insulin
  • Electronic fetal monitoring system: Fetalink; charting EMR: Cerner
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p-7a or equivalent)
  • Every other weekend (EOW) requirement; weekend shifts fall Friday/Saturday nights
  • First to float; floating may be required to other Sacramento-area facilities
  • Scheduling is posted 4 weeks in advance
  • On-call/standby may be required on scheduled shifts, with a 30-minute callback response expected
  • Holiday rotation required alongside core staff

Requirements

  • Active CA RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
  • Required certifications (all must be active; AHA-issued): BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN Advanced EFM
  • Minimum 1 year of LDRP experience required; 3+ years preferred
  • Candidates with L&D-only experience who also have OR circulating experience will be considered; postpartum-only experience is not accepted
  • Must be comfortable performing NRP at delivery; no in-house pediatric coverage
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked (both must include dates of employment and rehire eligibility)
  • Copy of driver's license required for consideration
  • Candidates must not have been directly employed (FT, PT, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past 12 months (candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered)

Additional Information

  • RNs must be able to catch/deliver babies (vaginal delivery skills required — please confirm candidate capability before applying)
  • OB physician is in-house 24/7; a perinatal specialist is also available to assist with neonatal complications
  • Anesthesia is on-call with a 20-minute response time when no patients have epidurals; anesthesia remains in-house for the full duration when an epidural is in place
  • Respiratory therapy attends every delivery and manages respiratory equipment including ventilator, CPAP, and bubble CPAP
  • GE fetal monitors are used; nurses are required to hold ACLS, and patients who receive general anesthesia are recovered in the main PACU
  • Each shift is supported by a charge nurse or nurse shift manager; the charge nurse does not typically take a patient assignment but may if staffing requires
  • No CNAs on unit; one OB tech is scheduled per shift
  • Candidates are required to pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam before an offer can be confirmed
  • On the first day of orientation, RNs are given a pass/fail skills test on sterile technique for Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes
  • Orientation is 12 hours
  • 13-week contract
