Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU - Acute Leukemia and Hematology position requiring ONS Chemo Certification and a minimum of 2 years of nursing experience including at least 1 year of hematology oncology experience.

Details

  • Inpatient PCU unit specializing in acute leukemia and hematology patients, including newly diagnosed acute leukemia cases
  • 12-hour night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:30 AM), with rotating day/night scheduling available depending on contract type
  • If on a rotating day/night contract, shifts may include days, nights, or a combination based on department needs, reviewed every 4-week scheduling period
  • Goal staffing ratio of 1:4, with potential for 1:5 based on unit needs
  • Weekend scheduling is variable based on unit needs
  • No set or blocked scheduling; self-schedule requests are accepted and considered before schedules are finalized
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Telemetry monitoring including interpretation of dysrhythmias
  • Chemotherapy administration, including body fluid handling and monitoring post-chemotherapy
  • Central line blood draws, central line sterile dressing changes, PICC line management, and peripheral line care
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, and blood product administration
  • Feeding tube care and management
  • Heavy focus on infection prevention protocols and patient falls prevention

Requirements

  • Valid Ohio (OH) or Compact RN license currently in hand at time of consideration
  • Nursing degree from an ACEN or CCNE accredited program required
  • Minimum 2 years of overall nursing experience required, with relevant experience within the past 3 years
  • At least 1 year of hematology oncology inpatient experience required; must have current specialty experience for clinical pass
  • Med/surg oncology experience required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and ONS/ONCC Chemo Certification
  • NIHSS certification preferred
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Skills required: telemetry monitoring, interpretation of dysrhythmias, IV therapy/infusions, blood product administration, chemotherapy administration, central line and PICC line care, starting and maintaining IVs, port access and management
  • 2 professional references required; at least 1 must be from a manager, director, or formal leadership role (charge RN acceptable for 2nd reference; no coworker references)
  • Prior travel experience required; first-time travelers will not be considered

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of Monday–Friday dayshift during the first week, followed by 36 hours of on-unit orientation with a preceptor in the second week
  • Ohio fingerprinting is required and must be completed promptly after signing a contract; candidates outside Ohio may need to drive to an Ohio fingerprinting location or complete a mailed packet urgently
  • Local candidates are accepted
  • All requested time off must be submitted at the time of consideration and will be built into the contract
  • Former employees of the facility are eligible after a 6-month separation period; current Ohio State University hospital employees are not eligible for a travel assignment at any OSU location
  • Preferred skills include management of oncologic emergencies such as acute tumor lysis syndrome (ATLS) and sepsis, as well as experience with lymphoma/non-Hodgkin's lymphoma and multiple myeloma

Units are nice, staff are kind. Single patient rooms with 4:1 ratios day and night on med surg.

Cons

Scheduled every weekend, floated for the first 6 weeks of contract every shift. Not traveler friendly even though they say they are. Staff are treated well not travelers.
