Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PCU/Medical Unit position in Rapid City, SD, requiring Epic proficiency and at least 1 year of PCU nursing experience.
Details
- 12-hour day shifts on a 36–48 bed Medical unit (flex with semi-private rooms as needed)
- Mixed acuity unit serving Med/Surg to Intermediate Care (IMC) levels, as well as long length-of-stay patients (90% Med/Surg, 10% IMC)
- Common diagnoses include DKA requiring insulin drips, pre/post-surgical care, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, DVTs, and CVA overflow
- Nurses administer oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feeding, and blood product transfusions
- Nurses manage peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, nasogastric tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
- Telemetry monitoring is present; nurses are responsible for reading and interpreting cardiac strips
- Patient ratios vary by acuity: Long length-of-stay (Med/Surg, no tele) 1:5–6; Med/Surg Telemetry (no IMC drips) 1:5; Intermediate Care 1:4
- EMR: Epic (required); also uses Omnicell and Alaris
- 6-week scheduling blocks; travelers may be scheduled up to 4 out of 6 weekends, including Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Floating required to any adult inpatient unit (Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, Observation) in rotation with other travelers, within scope of practice
Requirements
- Active RN license — SD Board of Nursing license or Compact RN license required
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum 1 year of PCU RN experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Proficiency with drip titration including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed (up to 5 mcg), and occasionally Esmolol or other beta-blockers/antihypertensives
- Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patients; ability to read and interpret cardiac strips, perform wound care, line and drain/tube management, and drip titration
- Comfort with Med/Surg assignments is required
- Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply provided they have at least 1 year of experience and Epic proficiency
- Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning in a travel capacity
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), a non-patient-carrying charge nurse, phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, and hospitalist coverage
- Orientation consists of two days of classroom and department orientation with the Nursing Professional Development Team, followed by two precepted shifts on the unit
- No mandatory on-call requirement
- RTO requests during holidays require manager approval; no RTO is approved during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally blackout period (approximately August 1–18)
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring; nurses must maintain at least 90% compliance
- Travelers may occasionally be expected to precept nursing students
