Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Med/Surg Telemetry travel contract requiring Epic EMR proficiency and total joint experience on a busy inpatient surgical unit.

Details

  • Acute care inpatient setting, Med/Surg Telemetry unit (3rd floor) with 48 beds across two buildings
  • Patient population includes post-surgical cases such as laminectomy, cervical fusion, joint replacements (total hips/knees), ostomies, hernia repair, fem-pop bypass, BKA/AKA, as well as sepsis, chronic pain, dialysis, and urgent OR admissions
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4-6 on nights; LPNs available, along with virtual admission and discharge nurses
  • Primary care nursing model is frequently used — candidates must be comfortable with this model
  • Common procedures and therapies include PCA pumps, TPN/Lipids, PICC lines, epidurals, IV antibiotics, heparin drip titration, and narcotic management
  • Respiratory therapy manages CPAP (home unit), Airvo, and BiPAP; RT remains on unit for BiPAP patients
  • Telemetry monitoring is supported by a monitor tech; RNs are required to independently interpret their own strips using Dräger monitors
  • Epic EMR is used; experience is required as the facility is undergoing an Epic conversion in Q2 2026
  • 12-hour night shifts (7 PM start), three shifts per week
  • Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday)
  • No on-call or standby requirement
  • Floating is limited to like units only; if floated to a higher acuity unit, the traveler would serve in a support role only, not carrying a full patient load
  • Schedules are set 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling is not guaranteed

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Active BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • Surgical nursing experience required, including total joint replacement experience
  • Experience with PCA pumps, reversal agents (Narcan), and sepsis management required
  • Experience with TPN and Lipid administration required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Ability to independently interpret telemetry strips required
  • Comfortable with a primary care nursing model

Additional Information

  • Unit is fast-paced with heavy patient loads, receiving 8–12 surgical admissions per day in addition to active discharges
  • Charge nurses on days are typically staff nurses who carry a reduced assignment; nights may be covered by the house supervisor in a similar capacity
  • CNAs are available but may be pulled for sitter duties; night shift has higher CNA needs
  • Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift on the hired unit and shift; the first day runs 12–14 hours to complete competencies, computer-based modules, and general orientation
  • Travelers are included in the holiday rotation alongside core staff
  • Black scrubs required
  • Local candidates are accepted for this position

Quincy, IL

About

Quincy is steeped in a rich history, revealed in its more than 3,600 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The magnificent East End downtown is where movers and shakers lived during the 19th century, while the architecture in the South Side German Historic District sports an evident German influence. Perched atop bluffs along the Mississippi River in western Illinois, only the water separated it from the former slave state of Missouri on the other side. In the 1830s, Quincy was an essential link in the Underground Railroad and a pivotal city on the issue of slavery. Learn more at the History Museum on the Square, set within a Romanesque-Revival-style building that once served as the Quincy Public Library. At the riverfront Clat Adams Bicentennial Park, locals and visitors enjoy a series of outdoor concerts and 4th of July fireworks each summer.
