Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Labor & Delivery position in a Family Birthing Center setting, requiring at least 2 years of L&D experience and a full suite of OB certifications for a 13-week night shift contract in California.
Details
- Acute care hospital setting within a Family Birthing Center covering L&D and Mother/Baby (MB) units
- L&D unit has 4 beds; MB unit has 8 beds
- Patient population includes standard term and preterm L&D, couplets, GYN patients, and newborns requiring IV antibiotics or short-term O2 — no high-risk OB; mothers at 34 weeks or below are transferred out
- Patient ratios: L&D 1:2, 1:1 during active delivery; MB 1:4 (couplets)
- Unit averages approximately 45 deliveries per month
- Each delivery is staffed with 2 RNs and 1 RT
- Charge nurse is typically non-patient-carrying but provides break relief; no nurse aides on unit
- Charting via Cerner EMR
- 12-hour night shifts (1845–0715)
- Every other weekend required; weekend nights include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday
- Travelers rotate into holiday coverage with core staff
- First to float; floating responsibility is within L&D or MB only — no cross-unit floating outside the Family Birthing Center
- Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance with no self-scheduling; travelers can view schedules remotely and indicate availability for extra shifts or arrange trades with other staff
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7; pharmacy hours are 0630–2200 with on-call pharmacist overnight
- Hospitalist/OB on-call and Anesthesia on-call available at night
Requirements
- Active CA RN license required; must be active at time of consideration — pending licenses not accepted
- Minimum 2 years of L&D experience required
- Required certifications (all must be active; pending not accepted): BLS (AHA), ACLS, NRP, STABLE, and AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring (AFM)
- Strong emergency response skills and ability to work independently with limited overnight resources
- Driver's license required for consideration
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked — both must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
Additional Information
- Floor-specific orientation is 2–3 days with a preceptor; bedside report is standard practice
- Facility-wide orientation for this CommonSpirit Sacramento region facility takes place in Sacramento, not at the local facility
- Candidates must pass the Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) before an offer can be confirmed
- A pass/fail sterile technique test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation
- Scrubs are provided by the facility
- Travelers are expected to work 2 of the 3 major holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year's); holiday time-off requests will be considered but are not guaranteed
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year are not eligible; candidates who worked PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
- Local candidates are accepted for this position
