Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Medical ICU (MICU) travel position in Alexandria, LA, requiring ICU experience and ACLS/BLS certifications for a night shift role at a Level II Trauma Center.

Details

  • Medical ICU (MICU) in the South Tower of a 26-bed unit within a Level II Trauma Center, Certified Stroke Center, and Certified Chest Pain Center
  • Patient ratio is 2:1
  • Patient population includes cardiac, neurological, respiratory, and COVID-19 critically ill patients
  • Procedures performed include intubations, cardioversions, ventriculostomy drain placement and management, IABP management, CRRT, and patient proning
  • Equipment used includes ventilators, Alaris IV pumps, balloon pumps, ventriculostomy drains, glucometers, and iMobile phones
  • Documentation system is Meditech using EBCD (Evidence Based Clinical Documentation)
  • Night shift: 7:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 12-hour shifts
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating to other Medical-Surgical units as needed, with priority focus on pulling to other ICUs
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active RN license — LA license or Compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and ACLS required (AHA or ARC accepted); TNCC is a plus
  • NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification required
  • Certifications must not expire within the first 30 days of the assignment start
  • Minimum 1 year of recent ICU experience required
  • Proficiency in ventilator management and critical care drip management required
  • Strong assessment skills with working knowledge of cardiac, neuro, and respiratory systems required
  • Willingness and ability to care for COVID-19 patients required
  • No gaps in work history of 90 days or more within the past 12 months
  • US SSN and date of birth required for consideration
  • One professional reference required

Additional Information

  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible — local candidates are not accepted
  • RN care is total care; unit is staffed by RNs and a unit secretary/COVID runner
  • Patient experience standards include hourly rounding, bedside hand-off reporting, completion of 'My Care Board' during hand-off, and use of AIDET for compassionate connected care
  • Proper PPE protocols apply, including masks, face shields, goggles, PAPRs, and hoods for COVID-19 patients; green surgery scrubs are provided when working with COVID-19 patients
  • Required dress code: ceil blue scrubs; white or ceil blue scrub jacket optional
  • Self-scheduling is available within certain guidelines
  • The unit has been recognized as an HCA Unit of Distinction, ranking overall #2 in HCA ICUs in 2019
  • Many staff members, including managers, hold national certifications; several are highly tenured
  • First-time travelers are not mentioned as accepted — prior travel or strong ICU background is recommended

Staff nurses very friendly and lots of team work. Very high acuity patients provides good experience.

Cons

HCA facility, lots of ED holds, ICU holds in the department. Facility accepts lots of transfers. Patients in hallway beds due to high volume.
