Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg night shift position requiring telemetry skills and a minimum of 2 years of experience, with local candidates welcome.

Details

  • Acute care hospital Med/Surg unit with an isolation area dedicated to COVID patients and adjacency to a stepdown unit (staffed separately)
  • Patient population includes dementia, diabetes, COVID, pneumonia, COPD, sepsis, encephalopathy, GI bleed, anemia, hip fracture, and other typical Med/Surg diagnoses
  • Patient ratio of 1:5–6
  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45–07:15); 36 or 48 hours per week accepted
  • Weekend requirement: 12–16 shifts per contract
  • Floating required
  • Remote telemetry monitoring performed on unit
  • Key clinical skills include: IV insulin protocols, colostomy care, feeding tube management, pre/post hemodialysis management, blood product administration, central line blood draw, PICC line management, phlebotomy, chest tube management (Emerson/Pleuravac), CPAP/BiPAP, HFNC, wound care/wound vac, and isolation precautions
  • EMR: Epic (preferred); Pyxis for medication management; SBAR for communication
  • Contract staff may be assigned to a Storm Team or Hurricane Team and required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters

Requirements

  • Active RN license in NC or a compact state (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current BLS certification
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Med/Surg and remote telemetry monitoring experience required
  • Ability to interpret dysrhythmias required
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor are required prior to start (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)

Additional Information

  • 13-week minimum contract; longer contracts are available for interested candidates
  • Unit orientation is 24 hours; hospital orientation takes place during week one and requires availability for classes each day
  • Approximately 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are required (recorded via online learning, Zoom, webinar, and in-person classes); modules must also be completed annually
  • Must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved provided it does not fall on a holiday; RTO is not permitted during the first week of the assignment (orientation week); additional RTO beyond 7 days requires facility approval
  • Previous permanent, PRN, or EP employees of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
  • Travel pairs are permitted — each must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Preferred skills include: MS/Tele unit experience, on-unit telemetry monitoring, port access, insulin management, CVA care, surgical drains, ABG interpretation, tracheostomy management, and Epic proficiency
  • Scrub colors: Navy and/or White
  • Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted
