Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg position at a Level III Trauma facility, requiring at least 1 year of Med/Surg experience and Epic proficiency.
Details
- Acute care Med/Surg unit in a Level III Trauma hospital
- 38-bed Med/Surg unit with a diverse patient population including adults and possibly older teens
- Common diagnoses include pneumonia, UTI, dehydration, influenza, alcohol withdrawal, and respiratory illness
- Surgical patients include orthopedic (hips, knees, shoulders), general surgery (appendix, gallbladder, bowel), spinal surgery (laminectomies, spinal fusions), and urology
- Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:5-6 on both days and nights; must be able to manage a 1:6 ratio
- High patient turnover on days — discharges are typically followed by new admissions
- Nurses are required to titrate drips; common titratable drips include Heparin, with set-rate drips including Bumex and Lasix
- Cardiac monitoring technicians available 24/7; RNs are not required to read their own telemetry strips
- Nursing supervisors available 24/7; charge nurses on both day and night shifts do not take patient assignments
- Nurse aides available at a 1:8–1:10 ratio, capable of performing accuchecks and vital signs
- Respiratory therapy support available 24/7; RT equipment includes trachs, CPAP for OSA, BiPAP, and high-flow oxygen (used infrequently)
- Charting system: Epic (experience required)
- 12-hour shifts with a mix of days and nights (6:00 AM–6:30 PM / 6:00 PM–6:30 AM)
- Weekend and holiday coverage required on an as-needed basis
- May float to the IMCU
- No self-scheduling for travel RNs; blocked scheduling may be accommodated on occasion
- 11-week contract
Requirements
- Active NE or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification (AHA or ARC) required
- Current CPI certification required
- Minimum 1 year of Med/Surg experience required
- Epic EMR experience required
- Experience with bedside shift report required
- Must be able to manage a 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio
- Experience on the shift being applied for (days or nights) is required
Additional Information
- Strong teamwork is expected, including answering call lights and collaborating effectively with CNAs
- Bedside shift report and proactive patient rounding are standard expectations on this unit
- Orientation consists of 1.5 shifts
- Navy blue scrubs required
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Candidates must reside more than 45 miles from the facility to qualify for this position
- Low census/call cancellations may occur
