Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg position requiring a minimum of 2 years of experience, Epic proficiency, and the ability to manage insulin and heparin drips on night shift.

Details

  • Acute care hospital Med/Surg unit with a daily census of approximately 43 patients
  • Adult and geriatric general Med/Surg patient population; no PCU-level patients on this unit
  • Patient ratio of 1:6
  • Procedures and skills include heparin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high-flow oxygen, and occasional short-term BiPap with respiratory support
  • EMR: Epic (required); medication dispensing via Pyxis; communication using SBAR
  • 12-hour night shifts, 18:45–07:15, with 36 or 48 hours per week accepted
  • Every other weekend required
  • Holiday coverage required — candidate must work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • On-call required for pre-scheduled call shifts
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations, including inpatient holding areas
  • Contract length of 13–26 weeks

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required (may be submitted with license pending)
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg RN experience required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Proficiency with insulin and heparin drips required
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required prior to start (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
  • Any previous permanent, PRN, or employed-physician staff at this health system must have a 12-month gap before being considered as a traveler, with facility rehire approval required

Additional Information

  • Charge nurse experience preferred; charge role is preferred for night shift travelers
  • CPI certification preferred
  • 24-hour unit orientation provided, followed by weekly orientation; 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules required (completed via online learning, Zoom, webinar, or in-person classes)
  • All travelers are required to attend monthly unit team meetings (4th Wednesday, January–October; 3rd Wednesday, November–December at 17:30); additional night shift meetings held at 07:30 on the Friday following each Wednesday meeting
  • Travelers will be assigned to an Inclement Weather/Storm Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters; mid-contract unit reassignment is possible during such events
  • May care for COVID-positive patients
  • RTO is not permitted during the first week of the assignment (orientation); up to 7 days of RTO may be approved provided it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval and RTO after booking cannot be arranged on-site
  • Navy scrubs required; scrubs are not provided
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility may be eligible at a different rate
  • Travel pairs are allowed provided each traveler has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
