Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg night shift position requiring Epic proficiency and a minimum of 2 years of relevant experience.

Details

  • Hospital-based Med/Surg unit serving adult and geriatric general medical/surgical patients
  • Daily unit census of approximately 43 patients with a 1:6 nurse-to-patient ratio
  • Night shift schedule: 3x12-hour shifts, 18:45–07:15
  • Every other weekend assignment required
  • Must be available to work holidays; candidates are expected to work 2 out of 3 major holidays
  • On-call required for pre-scheduled call shifts
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations, including areas with inpatient holds
  • Procedures and care include heparin drips, insulin drips, wound vac dressing changes, high-flow oxygen, and occasional short-term BiPAP with respiratory support
  • No PCU-level patients on this unit
  • EMR: Epic (required); Medication system: Pyxis; Communication framework: SBAR
  • 13-week minimum contract length; extensions up to 26 weeks accepted
  • Charge nurse role preferred for night shift travelers

Requirements

  • Active NC RN license or compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Proficiency with insulin and heparin drips required
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start
  • Two professional references from a manager or supervisor within the past 2 years required (pending at time of consideration is acceptable)
  • Candidates who have previously worked for this health system as permanent, PRN, or per-episode staff must have a 12-month gap before being eligible

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates are accepted; candidates residing within 50 miles of the facility are eligible at a local pay rate
  • Orientation is approximately 24 hours; weekly orientation format
  • Pre-start modules of approximately 8–10 hours are required and must be completed annually; modules are completed via online learning, Zoom, webinar, and in-person classes
  • CPI certification and charge nurse experience are preferred
  • Travel pairs are allowed, provided each traveler has their own transportation and is comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Travelers are assigned to an Inclement Weather Team and may be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualties, disasters, or hurricanes; unit consolidation to a centralized location mid-contract is possible
  • May care for COVID-positive patients
  • RTO is not approved during the first week of assignment (orientation); up to 7 days of RTO may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday
  • All travelers are expected to attend monthly unit team meetings held on the 4th Wednesday of each month (January–October) and the 3rd Wednesday (November–December) at 17:30; additional night shift meetings are held at 07:30 on the Friday following each Wednesday meeting
  • Navy scrubs required; scrubs are not provided
