Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg position with at least 2 years of experience, requiring Epic proficiency and comfort with 1:6-7 patient ratios on night shifts.

Details

  • Inpatient Med/Surg unit in a hospital setting
  • Patient population includes traumatic bone, joint, and soft tissue injuries, traumatic brain injuries, spine injuries, subdural hematomas, and a small neurological/nerve damage population
  • Patient ratio of 1:6-7
  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45–07:15)
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required to similar units and alternate care locations, including inpatient holding areas
  • 13- to 26-week contracts accepted; 36 or 48 hours per week available
  • EMR: Epic (experience required); also uses Pyxis and SBAR communication framework

Requirements

  • Active NC or Compact RN license required (may be pending at time of consideration)
  • Current BLS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of Med/Surg RN experience within the last 5 years
  • Epic documentation experience required
  • Must pass an EKG test prior to start
  • Required clinical skills: heparin drips, PCA management, colostomy care, feeding tube care and management, blood product administration, central line care/management, peripheral line care/management, phlebotomy, PICC line management, IV starts, dysrhythmia management, O2 protocol management, non-invasive airway management, isolation precautions/PPE, traumatic brain injury care, ortho trauma, surgical drains, chest tubes (Emerson/Pleuravac), nasal cannula, oral suctioning, tracheostomy management, and wound care
  • Two manager/supervisor references from within the past 12 months are highly preferred

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates within 50 miles of the facility are accepted at a different rate
  • Orientation consists of a 12-hour unit orientation plus 16 hours of organizational education; orientation begins weekly
  • 8–10 hours of pre-start online modules are required and must be completed annually
  • Candidates must be available to work 2 out of 3 major holidays; RTO is not approved during the first week of assignment due to orientation
  • RTO up to 7 days may be approved as long as it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval and is not guaranteed
  • Contract staff may be assigned to a Storm Team and/or Hurricane Team and could be required to report during catastrophic events, mass casualty incidents, or disasters; unit consolidation or reassignment mid-contract is possible
  • Navy scrubs required
  • Preferred skills and certifications: ACLS, dysrhythmia interpretation, pre/post hemodialysis management, drip management, CVA care, pre/post neuro surgery, and spinal cord injury care
  • Travel pairs are permitted; each must have their own transportation and be comfortable with potentially different schedules
  • Any previous permanent, PRN, or EP employee of this health system must wait 12 months before being considered as a traveler; facility rehire approval is required
