Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and proficiency in cardiac monitoring and vasoactive drip titration.

- 56-bed Progressive Care Unit (PCU) within an acute care hospital setting
- Adult patient population presenting with a wide variety of diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN patient ratio: 1:4 on PCU/Telemetry (days and nights)
- Performs cardiac rhythm interpretation, vasoactive and cardiac drip titration (Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed up to 5 mcg, and occasionally Esmolol or other beta-blockers/antihypertensives), IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain and tube management, catheter insertion and management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance
- Primary charting system is Epic (experience preferred); also uses Alaris and Omnicell
- 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required: every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
- Floating required to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (based on experience), and Observation; float in rotation with other travelers
- No scheduled on-call hours; may be placed on low census call if hours exceed the weekly contracted amount or upon traveler request
Requirements
- Active SD or Compact RN license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation experience required
- Proficiency in vasoactive and cardiac drip titration required; candidates without this experience must receive prior facility approval
- Epic EMR experience preferred; candidates without Epic experience require facility approval
- Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by two 12-hour precepted shifts
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), two free-floating charge nurses (24/7), 24/7 phlebotomy for peripheral draws, a flex resource nurse, respiratory therapy (24/7), 24/7 in-house hospitalist coverage, centralized telemetry monitoring, and a violent incident response team
- Attendance at pre-shift huddle is required at 0625 (nights) in the 7th floor conference room
- Every other holiday minimum coverage is expected during the contracted timeframe
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved; no RTO approved during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
- Monthly audits for pre/post pain scoring compliance — 90% compliance required
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Required scrub color for RNs: Navy Blue
- Free parking available on site
- First-time travelers are considered with greater than 2 years of RN experience
- Previous permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning in a travel capacity
- Candidates without Epic experience should disclose this upfront for facility approval consideration
