American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Neuro ICU position at a Level 1 Trauma facility, requiring EVD experience and a minimum of 18 months of Neuro ICU experience.

Details

  • 32-bed Neuro ICU within a Level 1 Trauma, acute care hospital setting — part of one of the world's largest neurological disease treatment and research institutions
  • Patient population includes any critical care patient with a neuro diagnosis, including post-craniotomy, brain tumor removal and ablation, brain biopsy, complicated spine surgeries, and scoliosis repair
  • Standard ICU patient ratio of 1:2
  • 12-hour night shifts (7p–7a)
  • 4 weekend shifts required per 4-week scheduling period
  • Holiday coverage follows core staff rotation
  • Floating required to MS/Tele floors (1:4 ratio) and potentially to satellite campuses; travelers are first to float
  • Cerner EMR
  • Phillips monitors used for telemetry
  • Ventilator management is part of the role
  • RT and Pharmacy support available 24/7
  • Charge nurse on unit does not take a patient assignment

Requirements

  • Active AZ or Compact RN license required — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses not accepted
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required; pending certifications not accepted
  • Minimum of 18 months of Neuro ICU experience required (candidates with less than 2 years will be considered if they meet this threshold)
  • Experience in a large hospital (450+ beds) required
  • Level 1 Trauma experience required
  • EVD (External Ventricular Drain) experience required
  • Strong neuro assessment skills and ICP monitoring experience required
  • Prior travel experience (3–6 months) preferred
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility — driver's license is used to verify permanent address
  • Two professional references required for consideration: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
  • Driver's license required for consideration
  • Must be able to pass the Relias Dysrhythmia (DYS) exam prior to accepting an offer (2 attempts allowed)
  • Must maintain natural hair color and have no facial piercings
  • Men must be clean-shaven (for fit test compliance)

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include critical neuro ICU care with a focus on ICP monitoring, EVD management, and post-surgical neurological patients
  • Orientation consists of 2 shifts on the floor (12 hours each)
  • A pass/fail competency exam is administered on Day 1 of orientation — a study guide is provided in advance
  • SIMs Lab is required and pass/fail: Neuro ICU nurses must complete the Foley catheter insertion skills assessment; competency in sterile field technique is expected and strictly evaluated — nurses have been terminated during SIMs Lab for breaking sterile field
  • Additional orientation topics include lifts, restraints, and wound care (educational only)
  • Steel grey scrubs are required for Neuro floors
  • Candidates must not have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity facility within the past year; candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
  • First-time travelers will not be considered — prior travel experience is preferred
