Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position at a Level II Trauma facility in Illinois, requiring Epic EMR experience and a background in surgical and total joint care.
Details
- Inpatient Med/Surg Telemetry unit (3rd floor) within an acute care, Level II Trauma hospital setting
- 48-bed unit spread across two buildings
- Patient population includes post-surgical cases such as laminectomies, cervical fusions, joint replacements (total hips/knees), ostomies, hernia repairs, fem pop bypass, BKA/AKA, as well as patients requiring TPN/lipids, PICC lines, PCA pumps, epidurals, dialysis, sepsis management, and chronic pain/narcotic management
- Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:4-6 on days and 1:5-6 on nights; LPNs, virtual admission/discharge nurses, and CNAs are available to support the team
- Primary care nursing model is frequently used — comfort with this model is required
- RNs are required to interpret their own telemetry strips; telemetry monitor techs are also on the unit (Draeger monitors)
- RNs titrate Heparin drips per protocol
- Respiratory therapy manages CPAP (home unit), Airvo, and BiPAP equipment on the unit
- Charting is done in Epic EMR — experience is required as the facility is undergoing an Epic conversion in Q2 2026
- Three 12-hour day shifts per week (7:00 AM start)
- Schedules are posted 6 weeks in advance; block scheduling is not guaranteed
- Every other weekend required (both Saturday and Sunday)
- Holidays are shared in rotation with core staff
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Float to like units only; if floated to a higher-acuity unit, the role would be in a support capacity without a patient load
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active Illinois (IL) RN license required
- Current certifications required: BLS (AHA) and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Surgical nursing experience required, including total joint (hip/knee replacement) experience
- Experience with PCA pumps, reversal agents (e.g., Narcan), sepsis management, TPN/Lipids, and narcotic administration required
- Epic EMR experience required
- BSN not required
Additional Information
- Fast-paced unit with heavy patient loads; can receive 8–12 surgical admissions per day in addition to active discharges
- Charge nurses on days are typically facility staff and take a reduced assignment to assist the team; on nights, the house supervisor may fill this role
- CNAs are available on the unit, though they may be pulled for sitter duties — night shift tends to have greater CNA support needs
- Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift on the hired shift and unit; the first day may run 12–14 hours to complete competencies, computer-based modules, and general orientation
- 4 hours of billable computer modules must be completed by 7:00 AM on the Friday prior to start; modules are available Monday–Tuesday of the week prior to start
- Black scrubs required
- Local candidates are accepted for this position

Quincy, IL
About
Quincy is steeped in a rich history, revealed in its more than 3,600 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places. The magnificent East End downtown is where movers and shakers lived during the 19th century, while the architecture in the South Side German Historic District sports an evident German influence. Perched atop bluffs along the Mississippi River in western Illinois, only the water separated it from the former slave state of Missouri on the other side. In the 1830s, Quincy was an essential link in the Underground Railroad and a pivotal city on the issue of slavery. Learn more at the History Museum on the Square, set within a Romanesque-Revival-style building that once served as the Quincy Public Library. At the riverfront Clat Adams Bicentennial Park, locals and visitors enjoy a series of outdoor concerts and 4th of July fireworks each summer.
