Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a PCU/Ortho night shift position at a Level 1 Trauma, Magnet-designated teaching hospital, requiring 2 years of recent specialty experience and both Kansas and Missouri RN licenses in hand.

Details

  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) with an orthopedic focus at a 456-bed tertiary care, Level 1 Trauma, 5-time Magnet-recognized teaching hospital
  • High-acuity orthopedic patient population including trauma, post-op total joints, ORIF, laminectomy, hand surgery, bladder suspension, and overflow gynecological and eye surgeries
  • Patient ratio is 1:5, with the possibility of flexing to 1:6 on rare occasions
  • High patient volume with significant daily admissions and turnover
  • Night shift: 3x12-hour shifts, 18:45–07:15
  • 8 weekend shifts required per 6-week scheduling period, with shifts falling on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday
  • On-call required: 1–2 weekdays per week and 2 weekends per 13-week contract
  • Regular floating may be required between departments, units, and other PCU floors within scope of practice
  • Charting system: Epic (experience required as both Kansas and Missouri licenses are needed for cross-facility floating)
  • Special equipment used includes traction, braces, casts, crutches, doppler, walker, hemovac, PICC line, midline, Alaris pump, and PCA
  • Free on-site parking available

Requirements

  • Active RN license for both Kansas and Missouri (or a Compact license covering both states) must be in hand at time of consideration — unwillingness to hold both licenses may result in assignment cancellation
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of recent PCU/Stepdown specialty experience required, including at least 1 full year of in-specialty experience within the past 12 months with no employment gap greater than 90 days
  • Level 1 Trauma and academic teaching hospital experience required
  • Proficiency with blood product administration, peripheral line care and management, PICC line management, and IV starts required
  • Experience with PCA management required
  • Skills in orthopedic trauma care, peripheral nerve block catheters, total joint replacements, and surgical drain management required
  • Wound care and wound vac experience required
  • Familiarity with isolation precautions and phlebotomy required
  • 2 professional references required: at least one must be supervisor-level or above; the second may be a charge RN — all references must be from within the past year and from someone who has worked with the candidate within that time
  • SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Candidates must reside at least 75 miles from the facility to be eligible — local candidates are not accepted
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Travel partners are not accepted for this position
  • Charge RN assignments may be required as needed per unit policy
  • Holiday shift coverage is required as assigned
  • RTO is limited to a maximum of 7 days for the contract duration; RTO and scheduling requests must be submitted at time of consideration
  • Pre-start compliance modules are required (approximately 10–15 hours total) and must be completed prior to the start date
