Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced ICU RN for a night shift travel position at a Level II Trauma, Magnet-designated teaching hospital in Rapid City, SD, requiring Epic proficiency and a minimum of 1.5–2 years of ICU experience.

Details

  • Mixed ICU setting encompassing MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU within a 39-bed unit at a Level II Trauma Center, Level II Pediatric Trauma Center, and Magnet-designated teaching hospital
  • Complex ICU patient population including surgical, medical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma cases with diagnoses such as ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, COVID, post-cardiac cath, post-surgical, and multiple system trauma
  • Patient ratios of 1:1 or 1:2, with 1:3 occurring rarely based on acuity
  • Cardiac experience is preferred, including CABG/TAVR 24–48 hours post-op; fresh open-heart cases are not assigned to travelers
  • Proficiency with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred
  • Epic EMR is required; facility also uses Alaris pumps (transitioning to Baxter) and Omnicell
  • 12-hour night shifts at 48 hours per week
  • Every-other-weekend rotation
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating to adult floors including Med/Surg and Telemetry (1:4 ratio) is possible but uncommon; occurs only when overstaffed

Requirements

  • Active RN license — SD license or a Compact RN license recognized in South Dakota is required
  • Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, and TNCC (TNCC is required and must be obtained prior to start)
  • Minimum of 1.5–2 years of ICU experience excluding travel assignments; candidates with 1.5 years of ICU experience plus significant non-ICU RN experience may be considered on a case-by-case basis
  • Epic EMR experience required
  • Experience with IV medications including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics; hemodynamic lines, proning, ventilator management, and telemetry monitoring
  • Strong critical thinking, assessment skills, and ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment
  • At least one prior travel assignment required; first-time travelers will not be considered
  • Must reside at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
  • 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Responsibilities include managing complex, critically ill patients across medical, surgical, cardiac, neuro, and trauma diagnoses with a focus on hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, and advanced ICU interventions
  • Unit support includes 1–2 CNAs plus a mobility float aide, 2 charge RNs overseeing all ICUs, 24/7 respiratory therapy, 3 intensivists on days and 2 on nights with an APP overnight, and a resource nurse (staffing dependent)
  • Phlebotomy is available for peripheral blood draws; ICU charge RNs place all midlines
  • Orientation consists of one 12-hour shift and one 8-hour shift in the ICU, plus hospital orientation
  • Navy scrubs are required
  • Free parking is available on site
  • No RTO is permitted during holidays or the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August each year); up to 7 days of RTO may be approved otherwise, provided the full 13-week contract is fulfilled
  • Former permanent staff must wait 1 year before returning to this facility as a traveler
