Details

  • Acute care hospital setting in a Family Birthing Center (LDRP) unit managing Labor & Delivery, postpartum, and OB patients
  • Unit includes 10 L&D beds, 2 OR suites for C-sections, 3 OB-ED triage beds, 3 antepartum testing beds used for OB-ED overflow, and 12 postpartum beds
  • High-risk unit averaging 140–165 births per month
  • Common diagnoses include preterm labor, bleeding, inductions, cesarean sections, and hypertension
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios follow AWHONN guidelines: 1:3–4 couplets, 1:1–2 in L&D, and 1:1–3 for antepartum patients
  • RNs are required to titrate drips, including Pitocin
  • EFM system: GE Corometric monitors with Fetalink surveillance
  • RNs are required to read and interpret EKG strips for patients in PACU
  • OB surgical techs are present on the unit; OB hospitalist is in-house 24/7; neonatology is on-call 24/7 with daily rounding; anesthesia is in-house 24/7
  • Charting system: Cerner
  • 12-hour night shifts, with shift start at 6:45 AM (report at bedside)
  • Every other weekend (EOW) required
  • First to float; floating to other Sacramento-area facilities is possible mid-shift, though rare
  • On-call response time requirement of 30 minutes
  • Scrubs are provided by the facility

Requirements

  • Active CA RN license currently in hand — pending licenses will not be accepted
  • Minimum 2 years of L&D RN experience required
  • Required certifications (all must be active, no pending accepted): BLS, ACLS, NRP, and AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring
  • STABLE certification is preferred
  • Must be able to circulate C-sections and feel comfortable in all aspects of LDRP care
  • Must be able to float to mother-baby (MB) unit
  • Ability to read and interpret EKG strips (required for PACU patients)
  • Cerner EMR experience preferred
  • A copy of a valid driver's license is required for consideration
  • 2 professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked, and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked (must include dates of employment and eligibility for rehire)
  • Candidates must not have been directly employed (FT, PT, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity-affiliated facility within the past year (candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms may be considered)

Additional Information

  • This is a high-risk LDRP unit requiring candidates who are comfortable managing patients across the full continuum — from labor through delivery, recovery, and postpartum
  • The NRP 'Baby Catcher' role may be assigned for an entire shift, staffed by either L&D or NICU RNs depending on availability
  • A charge nurse/house supervisor is on the unit and generally does not take a patient assignment but provides break relief
  • Candidates must pass a Relias Dysrhythmia exam (basic or advanced) prior to offer confirmation
  • A pass/fail sterile technique test (Foley catheter insertion and central line dressing changes) is administered on the first day of orientation
  • Holiday rotation is required, shared with the regular staff
  • Rotate on holidays with staff

Pros

Rachel is an awesome recruiter. She is very responsive, very active, checks in on me regularly, and a great advocate. She is also genuinely a joy to speak to as well. I have been a travel nurse for about 4 years now and she has been the best and my favorite recruiter. I have no complaints and will definitely continue to work with her in the future.
