Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) Stepdown position in West Virginia, requiring telemetry strip interpretation, drip titration skills, and the ability to work a rotating day/night schedule with weekend shifts.
Details
- 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) with a mix of 14 private and 16 semi-private rooms in an acute care hospital setting
- Common patient diagnoses include chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cardiac catheterization, and patients on Tikosyn therapy
- Patient ratio goal is 1:4, though typically runs 1:5 and occasionally 1:6
- Telemetry monitoring via Nihon Kohden system; RNs must be able to independently read and interpret their own telemetry strips despite the presence of Tele Techs
- RNs must be competent in titrating drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- All respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed by Respiratory Therapy
- EMR system is Sunrise (Epic referenced as charting system — Sunrise used on unit); Pyxis used for pharmacy
- 12-hour day shifts; must be on unit and ready by 6:45 AM; shifts run 7:00 AM – 7:00 PM
- Weekend shifts include Friday, Saturday, and Sunday; day shift workers are required to work 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule and a minimum of 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule
- Self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met; up to 4 requested days off allowed per month
- Floating required into Telemetry or Med-Surg units with ratios up to 1:6, and occasionally 1:7 in Med-Surg
- 13-week contract
Requirements
- Active WV RN license or compact RN license required (facility is willing to wait for licensure)
- Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS)
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- BSN is not required
- Experience reading and interpreting telemetry strips independently is required
- Experience titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips required
- A copy of an unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- Any licensing hits (disciplinary actions, restrictions, etc.) must be disclosed upfront
- 2 supervisor/peer references required (at least 1 supervisor reference; if permanent employment within the past 12 months, one reference must be from that employer)
- Skills checklist completed within the past year required for consideration
- 7 years of work history required (or from graduation, whichever is less) with no gaps greater than 30 days; each work history entry should include hospital size, unit size, trauma level, and whether it is a teaching facility
Additional Information
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before re-applying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for longer than one cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
- Candidates may only be submitted to one WVU facility at a time
- Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on day one, followed by the remaining 8 hours on the unit with a preceptor, plus a full second day with a preceptor; travelers are expected to work independently after orientation
- IV team is in-house 24/7 and handles all IV starts; a PICC/Midline team is also available
- Support staff include hospitalists, intensivists, and residents in-house 24/7, as well as RT and pharmacy (Pyxis) available around the clock, and 2–3 CNAs on the floor
- Travelers are expected to be flexible for holiday coverage, though permanent staff typically cover most holidays
- RN scrub dress code: navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jacket; hoodies are not permitted
- Attendance expectations are strict; tardiness and call-offs are tracked, and 2 occurrences may result in termination; any emergencies must be reported more than 2 hours before a scheduled shift
