Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a 13-week Stepdown/IMU travel contract in Wheeling, WV, requiring ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications with the ability to titrate cardiac drips on night shift.

Details

  • 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) in an acute care hospital setting
  • Patient population includes chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cardiac cath (radial band management and removal, groin checks), and Tikosyn therapy patients
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio goal is 1:4, though 1:5 is common and 1:6 is possible
  • Telemetry monitoring via Nihon Kohden system; RNs must be able to independently read and interpret cardiac strips (Tele Techs are also available)
  • RNs must be able to titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitroglycerin, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
  • All respiratory equipment (AirVo high-flow, Respironics BiPAP) is managed by Respiratory Therapy
  • IV team is in-house 24/7 and handles all IV starts; PICC/Midline team also available
  • Charting is done in Sunrise EMR (note: Epic listed separately in posting header)
  • 12-hour night shifts; must be on the unit ready to begin at 6:45 PM
  • Weekend requirement: 4 weekend night shifts per 4-week schedule (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday are all considered weekend shifts)
  • Self-scheduling is permitted as long as unit needs are met; up to 4 requested days off per month
  • Floating is required into Telemetry or Med/Surg units as needed, with ratios up to 1:6 (occasionally 1:7 in Med/Surg)

Requirements

  • Active WV or Compact RN license required
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
  • BSN is not required
  • Ability to independently read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips
  • Ability to titrate vasoactive and cardiac drips
  • Copy of valid, unexpired driver's license required for consideration
  • Any licensing hits or disciplinary history must be disclosed upfront
  • 2 supervisor/peer references required (at least 1 supervisor reference; if permanent employment within the last 12 months, one must be from that facility)
  • Skills checklist completed within the past year required
  • Copies of all certifications required

Additional Information

  • Orientation consists of approximately 4 hours with HR on Day 1, followed by the remaining hours on the unit with a preceptor; Day 2 is also spent with a preceptor before independent practice begins
  • Charge nurses carry a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
  • Typically 2–3 CNAs on the floor with a 1:10–12 aide-to-patient ratio
  • Hospitalist, intensivist (in ICU), and residents are all in-house 24/7
  • Pharmacy (Pyxis) and RT are both in-house 24/7
  • Holiday flexibility is expected, though travelers are not typically required to work many holidays as permanent staff generally cover them
  • RN scrub color is navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jacket; hoodies are not permitted
  • Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a minimum 2-year break before reapplying
  • Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year without taking a 2-year break
  • Candidates may only be submitted to one WVU facility at a time
  • Work history covering 7 years (or back to graduation, whichever is less) with no gaps greater than 30 days is required; each entry should include hospital size, unit size, trauma level, and whether the facility is a teaching hospital
