Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an AL or compact RN license.
Details
- Float Pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
- Possible unit assignments include: Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, Med/Surg Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
- Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neurological (CVA, TBI, seizure, craniotomy), oncology, orthopedic, urology, and general Med/Surg patients (COPD, CHF, sepsis, renal failure, etc.)
- Patient ratios are typically 1:5–6 depending on unit
- Telemetry is monitored by Telemetry Techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
- 12-hour day shifts (7:00 AM – 7:00 PM) or night shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation of every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
- No on-call requirements
- EMR: Cerner (experience preferred)
- Equipment includes Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
- Floating is required to like units (e.g., MS-to-MS, MS-to-ER holds, MS-to-ICU tasks)
Requirements
- Active AL RN license or compact RN license (in hand or in process with ETA) required
- Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
- Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
- Cerner EMR experience preferred; Epic experience also accepted
- Core clinical skills required vary by unit assignment and may include: wound care, chest tube management, trach care, PEG/NGT care, IV starts, blood draws from central lines, foley care, ostomy care, PCA pump management, central line dressing changes, and telemetry strip interpretation
- At least 1 year of trauma/surgical experience required for Trauma Surgical unit assignment
- Chemo administration certification preferred for Med/Surg Oncology unit assignment
- Candidates must reside more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
- SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration
Additional Information
- Home unit assignment will be determined on the first day of orientation
- New travelers to the facility receive 24 hours of classroom orientation followed by 24 hours of on-unit orientation; orientation for returning travelers depends on length of absence
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:6 for VS, ADLs, and glucose checks), a charge nurse, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
- Holiday coverage is required for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per facility policy; specific dates are not guaranteed off prior to arrival
- Blackout dates (RTO not approved without manager approval) include select dates around major holidays throughout the year
- Up to 7 days of RTO may be approved excluding blackout dates
- Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available
- Any scrub color is acceptable
- Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
- Interviews are required; this facility does not use auto-offers
- First-time travelers are welcome with at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience
- Former permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked) before being considered as a traveler
