Description

American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for a Med/Surg Float Pool position at a Level II Trauma Center in Montgomery, AL, requiring a minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience and an AL or compact RN license.

Details

  • Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed Level II Trauma Center and Primary Stroke Center
  • Home unit assignment is made on the first day of orientation and may include any of the following units: Trauma Surgical (6 North), Neuroscience (5 South), Med/Surg Oncology (5 North), Clinical Decision Unit (4 South), Orthopedics (3 South), or MS/Ortho/Urology (3 North)
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuro, oncology, orthopedic, urology, and general med/surg patients
  • Patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
  • Night shift, 12-hour shifts (7:00 PM – 7:00 AM), 36 hours per week
  • Telemetry is monitored by telemetry techs; RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Floating may occur to like units (MS-to-MS, MS-to-ICU tasks, MS-to-ER holds)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Every other weekend rotation required (approximately 4 weekend days per month)
  • EMR: Cerner (preferred)
  • IV pumps: Plum 360 | Medication dispensing: Omnicell | Monitors: Spacelabs
  • 13-week contract

Requirements

  • Active AL RN license or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of Med/Surg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner EMR experience required if candidate has strictly ICU (no Med/Surg) experience; otherwise Cerner is preferred
  • Telemetry interpretation experience is a strong asset — candidates with this experience should detail it clearly
  • Unit-specific skills vary and may include: wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG tubes, central line blood draws, colostomy/ostomy care, PCA pumps, wound vacs, restraints, and more
  • Chemo administration certification highly preferred for candidates assigned to the Oncology unit
  • Candidates must live more than 60 miles from the facility to be eligible
  • SSN, DOB (day and month), copy of certifications, and one reference from a charge nurse or above within the past 12 months required for consideration

Additional Information

  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply, provided they meet the minimum experience requirements
  • Previous permanent staff must have been separated for at least 6 months (from last shift worked to assignment start date) before returning as a traveler
  • Interviews are conducted via SimpliFi video platform; candidates should be prepared for an interview
  • Orientation consists of 24 hours of classroom time followed by 24 hours on-unit for new-to-facility travelers or those who have been away for 1+ year; orientation for rehires depends on time since last assignment
  • Scheduling is managed on a 4-week cycle using Smart Square; self-scheduling is not available
  • Holiday coverage is expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy; specific dates are not guaranteed off prior to arrival
  • Blackout dates apply throughout the contract period — RTO requests during these windows require manager approval and are not automatically approved
  • Scrubs: any color permitted
  • Parking is available in the parking deck on levels 2 through 4 only
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:6), charge nurses, HUC/receptionist, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and telemetry monitoring techs
