Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU or telemetry experience and active SD or compact RN licensure.

- 56-bed Progressive Care Unit in a hospital setting
- Adult patient population with a wide variety of diagnoses including CHF, ARF, hepatitis, ESLD, DM/DKA, pneumonia, sepsis, GI bleed, syncope, chest pain, pulmonary emboli, respiratory failure, COPD, arrhythmias, seizure disorders, overdose, and delirium tremens
- RN patient ratio of 1:4 on PCU/Telemetry (days and nights)
- 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation required — every other weekend (Friday, Saturday, and Sunday)
- Every other holiday minimum is expected during the contracted timeframe
- Floating required to adult inpatient units including Med/Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, ICU (experience-dependent), and Observation; travelers float in rotation with other travelers
- Epic EMR preferred; experience with Alaris and Omnicell also utilized
- Centralized telemetry monitoring available 24/7 for telemetry reading and alarm notifications
Requirements
- Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or compact license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 1 year of PCU or telemetry RN experience required
- Proficiency in cardiac rhythm interpretation required
- Experience with cardiac and vasoactive drip titration required, including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, Levophed, and beta-blockers/antihypertensives
- Skills required: IV starts, blood product administration, CIWA protocol, drain/tube management, indwelling and straight catheter insertion/management, insulin drips (DKA and non-DKA), continuous bladder irrigation, and chest tube maintenance
- Strong verbal and written communication, thorough physical assessment skills, and sound clinical judgment
- Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible
- 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
- DOB and SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- First-time travelers are considered if they have more than 2 years of RN experience
- Previous permanent employees of this health system must wait 1 year before returning as a traveler
- RTO of up to 7 days may be approved; no RTO permitted during the Sturgis Bike Rally (first 3 weeks of August)
- Orientation includes 2 days of in-class/online education followed by 2 precepted 12-hour shifts
- Unit support includes CNAs (1:8 ratio), 2 free-floating charge nurses (24/7), 24/7 phlebotomy for peripheral draws (RNs pull central lines), a flex resource nurse, RT (24/7), and 24/7 in-house hospitalists
- Providers are reached via paging system and secure chat
- Attendance at pre-shift huddles is required at 0625 (nights) and 1825 (days) in the 7th floor conference room
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring — 90% compliance required
- May occasionally be expected to precept nursing students
- Required scrub color for RNs is navy blue
- Free parking is available on-site
