Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a PCU/HVU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1 year of PCU-specific experience and proficiency with cardiac procedural recovery and titratable drips.

Details

  • 44-bed mixed acuity unit (Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and Med/Surg) serving as a step-down, backup stroke unit, and medical overflow
  • Patient population includes direct admits, ED admits, post-cath lab, MI/NSTEMI/STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmia management, pacemaker malfunction, epicardial pacers, post-CABG, post-TAVR, post-EP studies, and post-pacemaker insertion
  • RN-to-patient ratio is typically 1:4, adjustable to 1:3 based on acuity
  • 12-hour variable shifts, 48 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation every other weekend; no on-call requirements
  • Holiday coverage required on a rotating every-other basis
  • Floating may occur to the sister General PCU unit, as well as Med/Surg Tele or ICU to care for PCU-level patients, within scope of practice
  • Charting system: Epic (experience preferred; manager approval required if not experienced)
  • Equipment includes Alaris infusion pumps and Omnicell medication dispensing
  • Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring; RN confirms strips at 6a and 6p

Requirements

  • Active SD RN license or compact RN license currently in hand
  • Current certifications required: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience with at least 1 year specific to PCU
  • Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post-cardiac cath)
  • Proficiency with titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levo, Dopamine), Heparin drips, and MI pharmacology
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation skills required
  • Chest tube management experience required
  • TNK administration experience preferred
  • 2 professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:5–8 ratio), an unassigned charge nurse, phlebotomy for peripheral blood draws, RT available 24/7, and a hospitalist in-facility 24/7
  • Resource nurse available occasionally; no IV/VAT team on unit
  • Orientation consists of 2 partial days of education followed by 3 supervised 12-hour shifts on the unit
  • May be expected to precept nursing students
  • Navy blue scrubs required
  • Free parking available on-site
  • RTO of up to 7 days is permitted; a full week off requires a contract extension
  • No time off approved during the first 3 weeks of August annually (Sturgis Bike Rally period)
  • First-time travelers are considered with 2 or more years of nursing experience
  • Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
  • Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from any facility in the health system to be eligible
