Description
American Traveler is hiring a travel RN for an Operating Room position at a small community hospital in Maine, requiring at least 3 years of OR experience, circulator proficiency, and a ME or compact RN license.
Details
- 4-OR suite at a 64-licensed-bed community hospital setting
- Adult and minimal pediatric surgical patient population
- Case mix includes general surgery (open and laparoscopic), urology, ENT, OB/GYN, orthopedics, and endoscopy (EGD and colonoscopy)
- Common procedures include bowel resections, cholecystectomies, appendectomies, hernia repairs, C-sections, hysterectomies, total joint replacements (knees and hips), ACL repairs, TURPs, laser lithotripsy, T&As, and more
- Robotics experience is not required; no conscious sedation cases
- All staff participate in room turnover
- Average of 25 cases per day
- EMR: Cerner (Cerner or Epic experience required)
- Equipment includes Alaris IV pumps and Pyxis medication dispensing
- Monday–Friday operating hours, 0700–1730, with 10-hour shifts and a rotating day off
- Call required: approximately 6–7 call shifts per month, including weekday and weekend on-call rotations (typically every 4th or 5th weekend)
- Weekday call runs end-of-shift (EOS) until 0700 the following morning; weekend call runs EOS Friday through Monday morning at 0700
- 20-minute call response time required
- May float to inpatient areas in a task/helper capacity only — no independent patient assignment assumed
- Holiday on-call coverage required for some, but not all, holidays within the contract
Requirements
- Active RN license — ME state or compact license required
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications required
- Minimum 3 years of OR RN experience required (5 years preferred)
- Circulator experience required; scrub experience preferred but not required
- Experience with the case types listed (general, urology, ENT, OB/GYN, ortho) required
- Cerner or Epic EMR experience required
- At least 1 prior travel assignment required — first-time travelers will not be considered
- Candidate's permanent address must be 100+ miles south/southwest of Bangor, ME
- No previous permanent employment at any Northern Light Health Hospital
- Two professional references within the past year required, at least one from a supervisor, manager, director, or charge nurse (peer references not accepted)
- Flu vaccination required for employment eligibility
- Copies of all certifications, driver's license, and full SSN required for consideration
Additional Information
- Primary role is circulating; scrubbing is not expected
- Scrub experience is a plus but candidates will not be expected to scrub and circulate
- CRNA, PA, and CST students are present at the facility; no residents
- Support team includes a charge RN, 2 resource nurses (including an OR educator), CRNAs, 1 anesthesiologist (Mon–Thu), anesthesia tech, RT (24/7), hospitalist (24/7), and phlebotomy
- One week of orientation provided, consisting of five 8-hour shifts; call buddy assigned during orientation week
- Call schedule is typically set approximately 6 weeks in advance by the manager
- One sleep room is available on-site for call (availability varies)
- Surgical scrubs are provided by the facility
- Free parking available on-site
- Manager interviews required
- All RTO requests must be submitted and approved by the manager
- Medical exemptions only are accepted for flu vaccine; exemption requests require a minimum of 2 weeks for committee review
