Description
American Traveler is seeking an experienced ED RN for a 13-week float pool assignment across multiple Emergency Departments in a rural Kansas zone, requiring ACLS, TNCC, NIHSS, and the ability to float within a 60-mile regional zone.
Details
- Float pool assignment covering three ED locations within Zone 4, centered around Garden City, KS (Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, St. Catherine-Dodge City, and St. Catherine-Garden City)
- All three facilities are non-trauma designated but serve as STEMI receiving and stroke centers, with send-outs as needed
- Common patient diagnoses include abdominal pain, diabetes, NSTEMI, pneumonia, trauma, stroke, and hypertension
- Daily patient volume ranges from 6–49 patients per day depending on location
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:4–5 based on acuity
- No dedicated monitor techs — RNs are required to independently read and interpret telemetry strips
- RT is available 24/7
- RNs will be trained to perform Point-of-Care lab testing
- Charge nurses are present and take patient assignments; techs assist with unit secretary work, floor support, and triage
- ER holds are intermixed within the ED; no separate psych/seclusion rooms
- Charting is done via Epic
- 12-hour day shifts, every other weekend required
- Holiday coverage required on an every-other basis
- No on-call or standby requirement
- Mandatory floating throughout all ED locations within the 60-mile Zone 4 radius — there is no home base facility
- Float assignments are communicated on or before each Monday start date
- Schedule is set by leadership based on unit needs
Requirements
- Active KS RN license or Compact (NLC) RN license — must be active at time of consideration; pending licenses will not be accepted
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- Required certifications (all must be active; AHA-issued): ACLS, BLS, ENPC or PALS, NIHSS, and TNCC — pending certifications will not be accepted
- ED/ER nursing experience required
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry independently
- Epic EMR experience
- Candidates must reside at least 60 miles from the Garden City, KS zone center to qualify for travel rates — a valid driver's license is required to verify permanent address
- Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years, both including dates of employment and eligibility for rehire
- A copy of a valid driver's license is required for consideration
Additional Information
- This is a true float pool role — travelers are expected to float to any of the three ED locations within Zone 4 and are responsible for securing housing that makes floating throughout the full 60-mile zone feasible
- Orientation is 2–3 days; clinicians must be in-state for the week of orientation even if initial modules are completed remotely
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Candidates who have been directly employed (full-time, part-time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity Health facility within the past year are not eligible — candidates employed PRN through outside staffing firms will be considered
- Interview process is conducted by the MedSol Clinical Team with no unit manager involvement

Pros
I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my first travel assignment. American Traveler has made the entire process feel easy from start to finish. Everything was explained clearly, and I always knew what the next step was, i never felt like i was left in the dark. One of my favorite things has been how communicative everyone is. Whether it’s my recruiter, Amanda, or Iranna from payroll, I always get a quick response when I have a question. It’s nice working with a team that actually follows up and keeps you in the loop. Amanda has been awesome throughout my assignment. She checks in regularly with a call or text just to see how things are going and make sure I don’t need anything. That level of support has really stood out to me. I’m rly happy I chose American Traveler for my first assignment, and I wouldn’t hesitate to work with them again.
