Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Float Pool PCU position at a Level III Trauma Center in Puyallup, WA, primarily supporting the ED Hold unit on 12-hour night shifts.

• Float Pool position at a 375-bed Level III Trauma Center in Puyallup, WA
• Primary assignment is the ED Hold unit, with floating expected across PCU, ICU, CCU, Med-Surg, Rehab, and other inpatient units
• Float areas include: MSICU (14 beds), CVICU (10 beds), PCU (40 beds), PCU Obs/2R South (18–27 beds), CCU (30 beds), Medical (89 beds), Surgical (55 beds), Flex Unit (9 beds), Inpatient Rehab (47 beds), and ED Holding
• Patient ratios vary by unit: ICU 1:2, PCU/CCU 1:4, Med-Surg 1:5, Rehab 1:8 (team model with RN, LPN, and Tech)
• ED Hold patients include mixed diagnoses with isolation and non-ambulatory patients in a fast-paced environment
• PCU patient types include respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and general ortho/surgical cases
• ICU patient types include respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, CVA, post-arrest, and complex post-operative patients (no craniotomies, major traumas, or major cardiothoracic)
• Med-Surg patient types include oncology, ortho, palliative, general medical/surgical, and COVID
• Rehab unit patients include neuro (stroke, SCI, TBI), multi-trauma, post-COVID, and post-ICU patients; vents and traches are present on the unit
• ACLS Transport role: transports patients throughout the entire hospital (all inpatient units, ED, CT, MRI, Nuc Med, PACU, Cath Lab); after 2300, RN assists ED Hold with breaks and med administration
• Charting systems: Epic, Alaris, and Pyxis
• 12-hour night shifts, 36 hours per week
• Must work every other weekend; back-to-back weekends are rare
• No holiday requests, self-scheduling, or on-call responsibilities
• Schedule is provided at least one week in advance and is built in 3-week increments

Requirements

• Active WA state RN license or compact RN license required
• Current BLS and ACLS certifications required for PCU and ICU assignments; NIHSS required for PCU and ICU
• Minimum 1.5 years of PCU experience required for PCU assignment; minimum 1 year of PCU experience with strong references required for PCU/ED Hold assignment; minimum 1 year of ICU experience required for ICU float
• PCU skills required: cardiac rhythm interpretation, chest tubes, lumbar drains, traches, and IV medication titration (Amiodarone, dopamine, dobutamine, insulin, heparin)
• ICU skills required: cardiac rhythm interpretation, vent management, invasive line management, ostomy, general drains, and traches
• Med-Surg skills required: IVs, PCAs, chest tubes, drains, ostomies, and IV antibiotics
• Strong communication and patient teaching/education skills required
• Telemetry competency exam must be completed and passed prior to start
• Two supervisor-level references required (charge nurse, manager, or director); one reference may be submitted for initial consideration with a second required before start

• COVID vaccine is required; only medical and religious exemptions are considered
• Orientation consists of 2 days of hospital-wide orientation (system access and modules) plus 1 day on the assigned unit; travelers receive up to 4 hours of orientation when floating to a new unit for the first time
• Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, hospitalist coverage is 24/7, and intensivist coverage is 24/7
• Tech support varies by unit: ICU 1:14, PCU 1:10, Med-Surg 1:8–10
• Travelers must call the staffing office at least 30–45 minutes before each shift to receive their unit assignment
• Must arrive to the correct unit on time at the start of each shift
• RTO of up to 5 days may be approved; additional days require manager approval and may require extending the assignment end date
• Travelers should be flexible and resourceful, as this is a high-acuity, fast-paced float pool role
