Description

American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Level 3 NICU position in Rapid City, SD, requiring at least 1.5 years of NICU experience and active SD or compact RN licensure.

Details

  • Level 3 NICU in a hospital setting with 28 beds and an average census of 13–16 patients
  • Patient population includes neonates of all gestational ages with diagnoses such as low birth weight, high frequency ventilation, nitric oxide therapy, total body cooling, and feeders/growers
  • No ECMO or cardiac surgery performed at this facility
  • Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:1 to 1:4
  • 12-hour variable shifts with options for 36- or 48-hour weekly contracts
  • No set weekend rotation, though travelers may be scheduled to work mostly weekends
  • Low Census on-call may be assigned
  • Two out of four major holidays are required
  • May float to PICU, Pediatrics, Postpartum, Newborn Nursery, or Adult Constant Observation (overflow on Peds unit)
  • Uses Epic EMR, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell medication dispensing
  • Pre-approved time off requests are considered by management

Requirements

  • Active RN license — South Dakota (SD) or Compact license required
  • Current certifications: BLS, NRP, and PALS required; STABLE certification preferred
  • Minimum 1.5 years of NICU experience required
  • First-time travelers must have 2+ years of NICU experience to be considered
  • Completion of a board of nursing-approved nursing education program required
  • Skills required include vent management, IV starts, chest tube management, and IV medication titration
  • Experience with neonatal resuscitation preferred (charge nurse will attend deliveries)
  • Two professional references dated within the past year required for consideration
  • DOB and SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Candidates must reside more than 100 miles from the facility to be eligible for this position
  • Former permanent staff must wait 1 full year before returning as a traveler
  • Unit support includes CNAs (1:10), a charge nurse with 24/7 coverage who attends deliveries, Respiratory Therapy, Neonatologists (3 on staff), and Neonatal Nurse Practitioners (10 on staff)
  • Lactation Consultants are available on the unit
  • A 24/7 transport team is in place; patients requiring surgery are transferred out, as there is no dedicated Pediatric Surgical Team
  • Phlebotomy is performed by the RN; no IV/VAT team on site
  • Orientation includes a general traveler orientation plus 1 day and 1 night shift on the unit
  • Epic experience is preferred; candidates without Epic experience may still be considered with facility approval
  • Scrubs: Navy required
  • Free parking is available on site

I couldn’t have asked for a better experience for my first travel assignment. American Traveler has made the entire process feel easy from start to finish.
