Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit position requiring at least 1 year of nursing experience and current Epic EMR experience.

Details

• Work in the Medical unit of a hospital, caring for a mixed Med/Surg to Intermediate Care (IMC) patient population
• Unit has 36-48 beds with flex semi-private rooms as needed
• Common diagnoses include DKA, pre/post-surgical care, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, DVTs, and occasional CVA overflow
• Administer oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feeding, and blood product transfusions
• Manage peripheral IV, midline, PICC, and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
• Provide preventative and restorative skin and wound care
• Interpret telemetry monitoring for assigned patients
• Patient ratios vary by area: 1:5-6 for long length of stay Med/Surg (no tele), 1:5 for Med/Surg with telemetry, and 1:4 for Intermediate Care
• Uses Epic EMR, Omnicell, and Alaris equipment
• Schedule is 12-hour day shifts on a 6-week rotation with up to 4 of 6 weekends required (Fri/Sat/Sun)
• No mandatory on-call, though extra on-call shifts may be available if staffing allows
• May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, and Observation, in rotation with other travelers

Requirements

• Active RN license (SD or Compact) currently in hand
• Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
• Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
• Epic EMR experience required for first-time travelers
• Comfortable taking Med/Surg assignments
• Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations preferred
• Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips
• Experience with wound care, line management, and drain/tube management
• Comfortable with drip titration including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and occasionally Esmolol or other beta blockers/antihypertensives

Additional Information

• First-time travelers are welcome to apply if they have more than 1 year of experience and current Epic experience
• Must reside more than 100 miles from any Monument Health facility to be eligible for this travel position
• Previous permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
• Unit support includes a 1:8 CNA ratio, a non-patient-load charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and 24/7 respiratory therapy and hospitalist coverage
• No resource nurse is available on the unit
• Orientation includes two days of unit and department orientation plus two shifts working with a preceptor
• May be expected to precept nursing students
• Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring with a 90% compliance requirement
• Navy blue scrubs required
• Free parking available
• RTO requests are not currently being accepted around winter holidays and must go through manager approval
• Time off requests up to a week and a half may be approved, though a full week off requires an extended request
• No time off is approved during the first 2-3 weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
