Description
American Traveler is hiring a Whole House Float RN for ICU/PCU/MS units requiring comfort working across all three specialties and at least 2 years of ICU experience at a Large Level I/II facility.
Details
- Whole House Float position covering ICU, PCU, and MS units within an acute care teaching hospital
- ICU average ratio 2:1, PCU average ratio 5:1, and MS average ratio 6:1 (may flex up to 7:1)
- Night shift schedule with 3x12-hour shifts (6:45pm-7:15am)
- Staffing needs reassessed every 4 hours, so floating may occur 2-3 times per shift
- Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block
- Must work one holiday per 13-week contract, with 2 holidays required during winter holiday periods (Thanksgiving, Christmas/Christmas Eve, New Year's Eve/New Year's Day)
- EPIC charting system experience required
Requirements
- Active VA State or Compact RN license required (single-state license from non-compact state accepted on a pending basis)
- Current certifications required: ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS
- CPI certification preferred
- Minimum 2 years of ICU experience at a Large Level I/II trauma facility required
- Must be comfortable working ICU, PCU, and MS units with ratios of at least 1:5
- Experience required in IV therapy, phlebotomy, PICC line management, central line care/management, arterial line management, and blood product administration
- Skilled in trach management and non-invasive airway support including nasal cannula, CPAP/BiPAP, ventilator management, and chest tubes (Emerson/PleurEvac)
- Proficient in cardiac monitoring, continuous IV sedation, emergency medications, and titrating cardiac and vasoactive drips
- Experience with EKG/ECG interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
- IV insulin protocol experience
- Teaching hospital and Trauma Level I experience preferred
- Previous charge experience preferred

- Deliver critical care nursing across ICU, PCU, and MS units based on facility staffing needs
- Facility is a 703-bed acute care teaching hospital and the region's only Level I Trauma Center for both adult and pediatric patients
- Magnet-designated for nursing excellence and affiliated with a medical school
- Certified as an Advanced Thrombectomy Capable Stroke Center
- First-time travelers are welcome to apply
- Local candidates may be accepted, subject to radius eligibility criteria
- Candidates residing within 100 miles of the facility are generally not accepted, with limited exceptions for inpatient RNs residing 50-99.9 miles away (eligible for one 13-week assignment with no extension) or less than 50 miles away (eligible for one 13-week assignment at a lower rate with no extension)
- Previous employees (per diem or permanent) must have a minimum one-year separation before returning as a traveler
- Travelers who have worked 365 days on assignment are not eligible to return, regardless of separation period, with case-by-case exceptions reviewed by facility leadership
- Facility may call off up to 1 shift per 2-week period
- All RTO and schedule requests must be submitted in advance
