Description

American Traveler is hiring a PICU RN for a 19-week holiday coverage assignment requiring 2 years of PICU experience and PALS certification.

Details

  • Work in the PICU of a 152-bed Level II trauma center with a Level IV NICU
  • Unit has 16 PICU beds with interchangeable overflow between MedSurg and PICU
  • Patient population includes respiratory (high flow, CPAP, BiPAP), trach, chemo, RSV, asthma, and COVID cases
  • Medical patients include MIS-C, new onset diabetes with insulin drips, chronically ill, and oncology cases
  • Trauma patients include falls, MVAs, and other injuries; Stat categories 1-3 and occasionally 4
  • Cardiovascular patients include those with congenital heart defects, cared for from surgery through discharge
  • Surgical patients include appendectomies, g-tubes, ENT, fresh trachs, bowel obstructions, broken bones, VP shunts, cardiac, and neuro cases
  • Unit does not treat solid organ transplant, major burns, or stem cell transplant patients
  • ECMO patients are managed by an ECMO specialist for the ECMO machine itself
  • CRRT experience with Prismax required for travelers taking these low-volume cases
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • 12-hour night shifts, scheduled 1900-0700
  • Every other weekend rotation required
  • Floating required to MedSurg, ED, or NICU as Helping Hands or Constant Observer

Requirements

  • Active WA or compact RN license required
  • Current BLS and PALS certifications required
  • Minimum 2 years of PICU experience required
  • Skills required include aseptic and sterile techniques, basic dressing changes, ventilator and trach management, and suctioning
  • Experience with g-tube/j-tube management, feeding tubes, chest tubes, epidurals, PCAs, and drip management required
  • Foley insertion and management and discharge planning skills required
  • CRRT experience with Prismax preferred
  • CICU experience preferred

Additional Information

  • 19-week contract specifically for holiday coverage
  • Provide direct care to pediatric ICU patients across respiratory, medical, surgical, cardiovascular, and trauma populations
  • Cardiovascular patients with congenital heart defects are cared for continuously from surgery through discharge
  • During rare COVID surge tier 3 situations, may provide care to patients up to age 30
  • Severe facial wounds, eye injuries, or penetrating trauma cases are transferred to a Level 1 Trauma Center
  • Scrubs may be any color, but hooded shirts and long sleeves are not permitted; sleeves must be able to be pulled above the elbow
  • First-time travelers will be considered for this position
