Description

American Traveler is seeking an RN for a high-acuity Level 2 Trauma Emergency Department position requiring 2 years of ED experience and multiple advanced certifications.

Details

  • Work in a busy Emergency Department seeing 150-180 patients daily
  • Main ED has 33 beds including 8 Trauma/Resuscitation beds and a 4-room Behavioral Health pod convertible to medical use
  • Additional vertical care area used for ESI 3/4 patients or as overflow pods during high-acuity periods
  • Level 2 Trauma Center treating heavy trauma volumes including stab wounds, GSWs, MVCs, drownings, and falls
  • Complete Stroke Center caring for stroke patients up to 24 hours
  • Care for neonatal through geriatric patients with conditions including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, and GI bleeds requiring blood products
  • Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for critically ill children and a cardiac catheter lab for cardiac patients
  • RNs responsible for Sexual Assault patient evidence collection in rotation with staff, including swabs, evidence collection, and interviewing (excludes pelvic exams)
  • RN to patient ratio is 1:4-5
  • Uses Epic EMR, Omnicell, and Alaris equipment
  • 12-hour variable shifts with start times including 0630-1900, 1000-2230, 1200-0030, 1400-0200, and 1830-0700
  • Scheduled for 36 hours per week with potential for every weekend depending on staffing needs
  • Variable shift staff will not work both days and nights in the same week
  • May float to inpatient Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU as a task nurse within scope of practice
  • No on-call requirements
  • ICU RNs may float to ED and PCU RNs may float to ICU based on experience

Requirements

  • Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
  • Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS
  • CPI or MAB/MOAB certification preferred
  • Minimum 2 years of ED experience required, excluding travel experience
  • Completion of an accredited nursing education program
  • Experience with all patient types listed, including trauma, stroke, cardiac, pediatric, and behavioral health
  • Strong triage skills with ESI assessment competency
  • Critical thinking and prioritization skills for high-acuity patient care
  • Epic EMR experience preferred
  • Must be comfortable performing sexual assault evidence collection duties

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care across all ED acuity levels, from minor complaints to critical trauma and stroke cases
  • Perform triage duties, accurately distinguishing critical from non-critical patients
  • Participate in sexual assault case rotation, with 24/7 support from a SA Quality Coordinator and resource materials available
  • Support from ED Techs (1:10 ratio), Lead Tech, Charge Nurses, 24/7 physician and NP coverage, hospitalists, phlebotomy, radiology, and security
  • May be expected to precept nursing students
  • Orientation includes 8 hours of facility NEO plus 4 hours of ED-specific education and a minimum of two 12-hour shifts on the unit
  • Navy scrub color required
  • Free parking provided
  • Holiday coverage only required if needed
  • Time off requests require manager approval, and no time off will be granted during the first three weeks of August due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Travelers must live more than 100 miles from any facility location
  • Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
  • Facility is known for renewing traveler contracts
