Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring at least 1.5 years of general nursing experience and 1 year in PCU, with a South Dakota or compact RN license.
Details
- Work in a 44-bed mixed acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU) providing Intermediate Care, Telemetry, and MedSurg level care
- Care for direct admits, ED admits, and post Cath Lab patients
- Manage MI, NSTEMI, STEMI, CHF, dysrhythmias, pacemaker malfunctions, and epicardial pacers
- Serve as backup for the Stroke unit and Medical Overflow
- Provide step-down level care for post cardiac/vascular surgery, post-cardiac cath, post open heart surgery, post TAVR, post EP studies, and post pacemaker insertion patients
- RN to patient ratio of 1:4, occasionally 1:3 based on acuity
- CNA support at a ratio of 1:5-8 depending on shift
- 24/7 RT support and hospitalist coverage in facility
- Tele tech oversees cardiac monitoring with RN confirming strips twice daily
- Uses Epic EMR, Alaris pumps, and Omnicell systems
- 12-hour day shifts, 36 hours per week
- Weekend rotation every other weekend
- Holiday coverage required every other holiday
- No on-call requirements
- Floating primarily to sister General PCU unit, with possible floating to MS/Tele or ICU within scope of practice
Requirements
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program
- Minimum 1.5 years of general nursing experience with at least 1 year specific to PCU
- Experience with cardiac procedural recovery (CABG, TAVR, post cardiac cath) required
- Knowledge of MI pharmacology and titratable cardiac/vasoactive drips (Cardizem, Amiodarone, Nitro, Levophed, Dopamine)
- Experience with Heparin drips, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and chest tube management required
- TNK administration experience preferred
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- First-time travelers considered only with 2+ years of experience
Additional Information
- May be asked to precept nursing students
- Orientation includes two partial days of education and three 12-hour shifts on the unit
- Navy blue scrub color required
- Free parking provided
- Up to 7 days of time off approved, with a full week off requiring an extended stay
- No time off approved during the first three weeks of August annually due to a local event
- Travelers must reside at least 100 miles from any facility within the health system
- Permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
- Facility is known for being traveler-friendly and frequently renews traveler contracts
