Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring a minimum of 1 year of nursing experience and current Epic EMR experience.
Details
- Work in the Medical unit of a hospital environment on a mixed acuity floor (90% Med/Surg, 10% Intermediate Care)
- Unit has 36-48 beds with flexible semi-private rooms
- Care for patients with diagnoses including DKA, pre/post-surgical needs, cellulitis, influenza, UTIs, pneumonia, COPD, CHF, renal failure (with or without hemodialysis), hepatic failure, GI disorders, soft tissue injuries, minor fractures, DVTs, and occasional CVA overflow
- Administer oral, IV, IM, and SQ medications, titratable vasoactive drips, TPN/tube feedings, and blood product transfusions
- Manage peripheral IV, midline, PICC and central line access, chest tubes, NG tubes, drains, and urinary/fecal collection devices
- Perform preventative and restorative skin and wound care
- Read and interpret telemetry monitoring
- Patient ratios vary by area: 1:5-6 on Long Length of Stay (Med/Surg, no tele), 1:5 on Med/Surg Telemetry, and 1:4 on Intermediate Care
- CNA support at a 1:8 ratio, charge nurse without a patient assignment, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, RT and hospitalist coverage 24/7
- Uses Epic EMR (required), Omnicell, and Alaris pumps
- 12-hour day shifts scheduled in 6-week blocks
- Weekend rotation of up to 4 out of 6 weekends (Friday-Sunday), including possible Every Other Weekend (EOW) scheduling
- No mandatory on-call requirement, though optional extra on-call shifts may be available
- May float to any adult inpatient unit including Med Surg, Ortho/Neuro/Surgical, Heart and Vascular, Oncology, or Observation within scope of practice
Requirements
- Active RN license (SD or Compact) currently in hand
- Current certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Minimum of 1 year of nursing experience required
- Completion of an accredited nursing education program
- Epic EMR experience required, including for first-time travelers
- Comfortable taking Med/Surg assignments
- Experience with IMC/stepdown and neuro patient populations
- Ability to read and interpret cardiac telemetry strips
- Experience with wound care, line management, and drain/tube management
- Comfortable titrating drips including Heparin, Insulin, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and occasionally Esmolol or other beta blockers/antihypertensives
Additional Information
- Provide direct patient care across a mixed Med/Surg and Intermediate Care unit
- May be asked to precept nursing students during the assignment
- Monthly audits are conducted for pre/post pain scoring, requiring 90% compliance
- Orientation includes two days of unit/department orientation with classroom training and two shifts working alongside a preceptor
- Navy blue scrubs required
- Free parking available onsite
- Holiday coverage expected, with RTO requests during winter holidays subject to manager approval
- Time off requests of up to a week and a half may be approved; full week requests require extension
- No time off approved during the first 2-3 weeks of August due to the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
- First-time travelers considered if they have more than 1 year of experience and required Epic experience
- Travelers must live at least 100 miles from any Monument Health facility
- Former permanent staff must wait a full year before returning as a traveler
- Facility is known for being traveler-friendly with high renewal rates
