Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Emergency Department position at a Level 2 trauma center requiring 2 years of ED experience and an active SD or compact RN license.
Details
- Hospital-based Level 2 trauma center Emergency Department seeing 150-180 patients daily
- 33-bed main ED including 8 trauma/resuscitation beds, a behavioral health pod convertible to medical use, and additional pods
- Vertical care area used for lower-acuity patients or as overflow higher-acuity pods depending on flow
- Patient population spans neonates to geriatrics, including sepsis, DKA, respiratory illness, GI bleeds, and trauma cases
- Heavy trauma volume including stab wounds, GSWs, MVCs, drownings, and falls, especially during summer months
- Comprehensive stroke center capable of managing stroke symptoms up to 24 hours
- Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for critically ill children and dedicated cardiac catheter lab for cardiac patients
- RN to patient ratio of 1:4-5, with ED Tech ratio of 1:10
- Uses Epic EMR, Omnicell, and Alaris equipment
- 12-hour variable shifts including 0630-1900, 1000-2230, 1200-0030, 1400-0200, and 1830-0700, with no mixing of day and night shifts in the same week
- Potential to work every weekend depending on staffing needs
- May float to inpatient Med/Surg, PCU, or ICU as a task nurse within scope of practice
- No on-call requirements
Requirements
- Active RN license (South Dakota or Compact) required
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, NIHSS, TNCC, and PALS; CPI or MAB/MOAB preferred
- Minimum 2 years of ED experience required, excluding travel assignments
- Completion of a nursing education program approved by a board of nursing
- Experience with sexual assault patient care including evidence collection, buccal swabs, fingernail scraping, and clothing collection preferred
- Strong triage skills including ESI assessments and ability to distinguish acute from non-acute patients
- Critical thinking and prioritization skills for managing multiple patient acuity levels
- Epic EMR experience preferred
Additional Information
- Responsibilities include triage, direct patient care across all acuity levels, and participation in sexual assault evidence collection in rotation with permanent staff
- Support available on the unit includes ED Techs, Lead Tech, 24/7 charge nurse coverage, 24/7 phlebotomy, respiratory therapy, physician and NP coverage, radiology/CT, pharmacy tech, and security
- 24/7 access to a Sexual Assault Quality Coordinator for guidance during sexual assault cases
- Orientation includes 8 hours of facility orientation plus 4 hours of ED-specific education and a minimum of two 12-hour shifts on the unit
- May be expected to precept nursing students
- Navy scrub color required
- Free parking provided
- Holiday coverage only required if needed
- Time off requests require manager approval, and no time off will be granted during the first three weeks of August due to the Sturgis Bike Rally
- First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
- Candidates must live more than 100 miles from any Monument facility to be eligible
- Permanent staff must wait one full year before returning as a traveler
- Facility is noted as very traveler-friendly with high renewal rates
