Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a 13-week night shift float pool position at a Level I Trauma Center, requiring an active AL or compact RN license and at least 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience.

Details

  • Float pool assignment covering multiple MedSurg and specialty units including Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Orthopedics, and Urology/ENT/Ortho
  • Night shift schedule, 7p-7a, 48 hours per week
  • Patient ratios range from 1:4 to 1:6 depending on unit assignment
  • Floating required to like units or patient locations (MedSurg to MedSurg, MedSurg to ICU tasking, MedSurg to ER/holds, ICU to ICU, ICU to MedSurg tasking with a limit of 3, ICU to ER/holds)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Weekend rotation required, every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month
  • EMR is Cerner, with Epic experience also considered
  • Uses Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors
  • Telemetry is monitored by dedicated techs, but RNs are required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours

Requirements

  • Active RN license (AL or compact) required
  • Current BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum of 18 months of MedSurg and/or ICU experience required
  • Cerner or Epic EMR experience required; if experience is strictly ICU-based, Cerner experience is required
  • Unit-specific skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, IV starts, trach care, PEG tubes, ostomy care, central line care, PCA pump management, and telemetry strip interpretation

Additional Information

  • Facility is a 492-bed Level I Trauma Center with a Level III NICU and Primary Stroke Center
  • RN will be assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • Support staff on units may include CNAs, HUC/receptionist, charge nurse, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, and hospitalist coverage
  • Orientation for new or returning (1+ year gap) travelers includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit
  • Holiday coverage expected for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy, though specific days off are not guaranteed prior to arrival
  • Facility maintains blackout dates for RTO throughout 2026, including major holidays and several long weekends
  • Up to 7 days of time off may be pre-approved, excluding blackout dates
  • Scheduling follows a 4-week cycle with no self-scheduling, managed through Smart Square
  • Scrubs may be any color
  • Free parking available in designated levels of the parking deck
  • First-time travelers will be considered for this position
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility, as local candidates are not accepted
  • Previous staff must wait 6 months from their last shift worked before returning as a traveler
