Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg Tele RN for a 13-week night shift assignment requiring IL licensure, EPIC experience, and surgical nursing background.

Details

• Inpatient Med Surg/Telemetry unit located on the 3rd floor surgical wing, spanning two buildings with 48 beds
• Nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4-6 on nights, supported by LPNs and virtual admission/discharge nurses
• Primary care nursing model frequently used
• Common diagnoses include neuro (laminectomy, cervical fusion), abdominal surgeries, joint replacements, PICC/TPN/lipids, fem pop bypass, dialysis catheter insertions, amputations, PCA/epidural pain management, sepsis, and urgent OR cases
• Titration of Heparin drips per protocol required
• Tele monitor tech available to monitor strips, but RNs must interpret their own strips
• Draeger brand telemetry monitors used
• EPIC EMR system used, with facility undergoing EPIC conversion in Q2 2026
• Night shift charge nurse role sometimes filled by house supervisor taking a smaller patient assignment
• CNA support available, with more need on night shift
• RT manages CPAP, Airvo, and occasional BiPAP equipment
• 12-hour night shifts starting at 7pm, scheduled 6 weeks in advance
• Every other weekend requirement (Saturday and Sunday) for both shifts
• Included in holiday rotation with core staff
• No call or standby requirements
• Floating limited to like units only; if floated to higher acuity units, RN would assist without taking a patient load
• Fast-paced environment with heavy patient acuity, averaging 8-12 surgical admissions daily along with concurrent discharges

Requirements

• Active IL RN license required
• BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum 1 year of surgical nursing experience required
• Total joint replacement experience required
• Understanding of PCA pumps and reversal drugs (e.g., Narcan) required
• Experience with sepsis management required
• Experience with TPN/lipids administration required
• Experience with narcotic usage required
• EPIC EMR experience required
• Level 2 trauma center experience

Additional Information

• Provide direct patient care in a fast-paced surgical Med/Surg Tele unit
• One 12-hour orientation shift scheduled on hire shift and unit
• First day includes extended 12-14 hour orientation covering competencies, computer-based modules, and general orientation
• 4 hours of billable computer-based training modules required to be completed by 7am the Friday prior to start date, delivered Monday-Tuesday of the week prior
• Black scrub color required
• Cancellation policy allows 3 shifts per 13-week (or longer) contract, or 2 shifts per 12-week (or shorter) contract
