Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Surgical PCU/Stepdown position requiring ventilator care experience and an active VA or Compact RN license.

Details

• Surgical Progressive Care Unit functioning as stepdown from the General Surgical ICU, with bariatric specialty and backup coverage to the trauma unit
• Night shift schedule: 4x12 hours, 6:45pm-7:15am
• Weekend requirement of every other weekend or 6 weekend shifts within a 6-week scheduling block
• Typical patient ratio of 1:5 with a staffing goal of 1:4
• Unit includes 2 beds for chronic trach patients (non-ICU level) with CPAP and BiPAP support
• Uses ortho equipment, chest tubes, surgical drains, trach care, endo tools, PICC lines, and MML
• Manages cardiac drips including Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, and Ketamine (no titration)
• Remote telemetry monitoring with tele sitting to increase Patient Care Tech coverage
• Required to float within skillset across PCU, DOU, IMC, and stepdown units
• Epic charting system required
• One holiday required per 13-week contract

Requirements

• Active Virginia State or Compact RN license required
• BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
• Minimum 1 year of RN experience required, preferably at a 250+ bed or larger facility
• Strong post-op patient care experience required
• Ventilator care experience for chronic trach patients required
• Experience with cardiac monitoring, dysrhythmia interpretation and management, and emergency response required
• Experience with IV therapy, phlebotomy, blood product administration, and central/peripheral line care required
• Experience with respiratory support including nasal cannula, oxygen administration, CPAP, and BiPAP required
• Experience with Rapid Response and Code team activation required
• Isolation precaution and PPE experience required

Additional Information

• Provide stepdown-level nursing care to post-surgical patients including bariatric and trauma backup cases
• Work in a Level I Trauma Center, Magnet-designated teaching hospital affiliated with Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine
• First-time travelers will be considered, particularly those with strong post-op experience at a similar facility
• Prior travel assignment experience is preferred but not required
• Previous employees, per diem or permanent, must have a minimum one-year break before returning as a traveler
• Travelers who have worked 365 days at the facility are not eligible to return, regardless of separation period, with exceptions reviewed case-by-case
• Local candidates may be accepted under specific residency-based eligibility criteria
