Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced PICU RN with at least 2 years of pediatric ICU experience and a SD or compact RN license to care for critically ill pediatric patients.

Details

• Work across a 15-bed Pediatric Unit and 5-bed PICU
• Care for patients 0-18 years, including adult overflow stable medical cases
• General Pediatrics covers respiratory illness, diabetes, septicemia, cellulitis, hyperbilirubinemia, neglect/abuse, mental health, trauma, neurology, and general surgeries
• PICU covers acute/chronic respiratory insufficiency, circulatory failure, infectious diseases, endocrine/metabolic disorders, neurologic diseases, toxic ingestions, trauma, and hematologic/oncologic disease
• Patient ratios: General Pediatrics 1:5, PICU 1:1 for mechanically ventilated or titratable drip patients, 1:2-3 for stable PICU patients
• CNA support available at 1:8 ratio
• 12 hour variable shifts, 36 hours per week
• Weekend rotation every other weekend
• May float to NICU (30 bed, feeder/growers, 1:3 ratio) or Gen Peds (up to 1:5 ratio)
• May be placed on low census/on-call status
• Uses EPIC charting system and Omnicell
• Uses Drager ventilators

Requirements

• Active RN license (South Dakota or compact) currently in hand
• Current certifications: BLS, PALS, and NIHSS
• Minimum 2 years PICU RN experience required
• Ability to perform physical assessments on patients ranging from pediatric to adult
• Ability to titrate drips and care for mechanically ventilated patients
• Proficient use of EPIC charting system
• Completion of an accredited nursing education program

Additional Information

• Provide direct patient care including physical assessments, medication administration, and patient/family education across both PICU and Gen Peds units
• RNs start their own IVs with ultrasound support available for difficult access, and draw their own labs
• Unit support includes a charge nurse covering both units, nurse clinician/educator, case management, social work, respiratory therapy, and 24/7 hospitalist coverage
• Intensivist coverage in house during daytime hours, with 20-minute response home call overnight
• 1 day facility orientation plus 2-3 days unit orientation with a preceptor across PICU, Peds, and NICU
• Holiday coverage required for all holidays
• Time off requests must be pre-approved
• Navy scrub color required

• Facility has a traveler-friendly, at-home culture with a focus on learning and growth
• First-time travelers considered only if they have more than 2 years of PICU experience
• Candidates must reside outside a 100-mile radius of the facility; local travelers are not accepted
