Description
American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for an Intermediate Care/Stepdown Unit position requiring telemetry strip interpretation and vasoactive drip titration skills.
Details
- Work in a 30-bed Intermediate Care Unit (IMU) in an acute care hospital setting
- Patient population includes chest pain, rule-out MI, CHF, arrhythmias, post-pacer, pre/post cardiac catheterization, and Tikosyn therapy patients
- Nurse-to-patient ratios typically run 1:4 to 1:6
- Uses EPIC EMR and Sunrise charting system
- Uses Nihon Kohden telemetry monitors; RNs must read and interpret their own strips despite having Tele Techs
- Titrate drips including Amiodarone, Cardizem, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Labetalol, Nitro, Heparin, and occasionally Lasix
- Manage radial bands and groin checks post-catheterization but do not pull sheaths
- 12-hour day/night rotating shifts from 7a-7p, with self-scheduling allowed if unit needs are met
- Weekend requirement of 4 weekend shifts per 4-week schedule for both day and night rotations
- Straight day shifts not typically available; those scheduling days must also work a minimum of 3 night shifts per 4-week schedule
- Floating required into Tele or MedSurg units with ratios up to 1:6 or occasionally 1:7
- 48-hour per week guaranteed hours
- 24/7 in-house support from Hospitalist, Intensivist, IV team, PICC/Midline team, Respiratory Therapy, and Pharmacy
- IV team handles all IV starts; RT manages all respiratory equipment including vents
Requirements
- Active WV or Compact RN license required, with willingness to wait for licensure
- Minimum 2 years of experience required
- BSN not required for this position
- Required certifications: BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS
- Must be able to titrate vasoactive drips and interpret telemetry strips independently
- Unexpired driver's license copy required for consideration
Additional Information
- Floor-specific orientation includes 4 hours with HR followed by 1.5 days with a preceptor on the unit
- Charge nurses take a full patient assignment on both day and night shifts
- Unit also staffed by a Clinical Assistant and 2-3 CNAs with ratios of 1:10-12
- Holiday coverage is typically minimal as holidays are usually covered by permanent staff, but flexibility is expected
- Required scrub color is navy blue top and bottom with navy scrub jackets; no hoodies allowed
- Staff are allowed 4 requested days off per month through self-scheduling
- Must reside within a 50-mile radius of the facility; local candidates are not accepted
- Travelers who previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers are limited to one year of cumulative work within the WVU system before requiring a 2-year break
- All candidates interview directly with the unit manager
