Travel/Contract Registered Nurse - Stepdown Unit
Location: Cleveland, Ohio
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Summary
- Assignment in a Stepdown unit with potential to float to related units including Emergency Department.
- Rotating shifts: 7pm-7:30am / 7am-7:30pm (3 shifts per week, 12-hour shifts). Shift rotation may be required to meet hospital needs.
- Must work at least every other holiday.
Required Experience
- Minimum 18 months of permanent experience in the specialty prior to travel.
- Minimum 18 months recent Stepdown experience (travel experience counts).
- Progressive Care Unit (PCU) or Progressive Care experience preferred but not required.
Required Licenses & Certifications
- Valid Ohio RN license or Compact State RN license in hand.
- Current certifications required:
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
- ECG rhythm recognition test and SafeMedicate medication exam must be passed during orientation.
Orientation & Testing
- Baseline competency exams on medication administration and ECG interpretation at orientation.
- Passing scores: 90% for medication exam, 80% for ECG exam.
- Remediation and retake opportunities provided if needed.
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start, confirming ability to safely perform job functions.
- Fit mask test (N95) within 12 months, updated annually.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Tdap (every 10 years)
- TB screening (2-step PPD, QGold, or TSPOT within 12 months) or chest X-ray if past positive.
- MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) - 2 vaccines or positive titers.
- Varicella - 2 vaccines or positive titer.
- Hepatitis B - titer, series, or declination accepted with agency-approved exemptions.
- Seasonal flu vaccination required annually (no declinations accepted; medical/religious exemptions must be approved).
- Drug screening: Standard 10-panel drug screen within 12 months, updated annually. Instant drug screens not accepted.
- Eye exam (Snellen) within 1 year of start.
Background & Documentation
- Government-issued photo ID required.
- Background check including 7-year FCRA compliant search, education verification, and fingerprinting (FBI and BCI) required. Fingerprinting must be completed within 48 hours of contract signing and updated annually.
- Fingerprints must be completed under nursing code 4723.09. Facility will also conduct fingerprinting onsite.
- NURSYS license verification within 30 days of start.
- Employment application with 3 years prior work history including at least 2 years clinical acute care practice in a similar area.
- Two professional references from within 1 year of start required (manager, supervisor, charge nurse, or director).
Additional Notes
- Candidates must complete facility-specific online onboarding modules prior to start. Modules must be completed on a computer using Google Chrome.
- Candidates may be required to float to other units caring for similar patient populations.
- Must be able to work rotating shifts and holidays as scheduled.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Ohio
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- Minimum 1.5 years of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience, with PCU experience within the last year
- Stepdown unit experience
- Current ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Current BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- NIHSS certification
