Registered Nurse – Labor and Delivery

Facility: University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center Bel Air
Location: Bel Air, MD
Start Date: 07/13/2026
Duration: 13 Weeks
Shift: Night 3x12-Hour (19:00 - 07:30)
Schedule: 36 Hours/Week, Every Other Weekend Required
Charting System: Epic 
Float Required: Yes – within specialty and sister units as needed
Call Requirement: No
Note: LDRP unit with Level II Special Care Nursery. First-time travelers accepted.

Position Overview:

The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse provides comprehensive maternal and neonatal nursing care across antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum stages. The RN supports low-risk and high-risk obstetric patients, manages labor progression, assists in deliveries, and provides immediate neonatal care in a high-volume LDRP unit with integrated obstetric and newborn services.

Job duties:

  • Provide direct nursing care to antepartum, intrapartum, and postpartum patients across all stages of labor and delivery.
  • Monitor maternal vital signs, fetal heart rate patterns, and labor progression using external and internal fetal monitoring systems.
  • Assist with vaginal deliveries, cesarean sections, forceps/vacuum-assisted deliveries, and high-risk obstetric procedures.
  • Perform sterile vaginal exams, amniinfusion, NSTs, and intrauterine pressure catheter (IUPC) placement and monitoring.
  • Administer and manage obstetric medications including Pitocin, magnesium sulfate, antihypertensives, insulin drips, prostaglandins, and terbutaline.
  • Provide emergency response for obstetric complications including postpartum hemorrhage, pre-eclampsia/eclampsia, placental abruption, and fetal distress.
  • Circulate and scrub for C-sections and assist in operative obstetric procedures.
  • Provide immediate neonatal care including APGAR scoring, neonatal resuscitation, thermoregulation, and newborn stabilization.
  • Support breastfeeding education, postpartum recovery care, fundal checks, lochia assessment, and perineal care.
  • Educate patients and families on labor process, postpartum recovery, newborn care, and discharge instructions.
  • Collaborate with obstetricians, neonatologists, anesthesiology, and interdisciplinary teams to ensure safe maternal and neonatal outcomes.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and adhere to infection prevention and patient safety protocols.

Requirements:

Licensure: Active Maryland RN License or Compact RN License

Experience: Minimum 2 Years Labor & Delivery Experience Required; First-time travelers accepted

Certifications:

  • BLS
  • NRP
  • ACLS (Preferred)
  • AWHONN Intermediate/Advanced (Preferred)
  • FHM (Preferred)
  • STABLE (Preferred)

Other requirement:

  • Experience with LDRP unit care model
  • Experience managing high-risk obstetric patients
  • Experience with fetal monitoring (external and internal)
  • Ability to circulate for C-sections
  • Neonatal resuscitation experience required
  • Comfort with variable acuity including triage, induction, active labor, and postpartum care
