UNIT DESCRIPTION
The Medical Surgical unit is a 37-bed unit providing care for a diverse patient population with both oncologic and general medical-surgical needs. Core patient populations include individuals undergoing active cancer treatment, post-surgical oncology cases, and those requiring symptom management for complications such as neutropenia, pain crises, and disease progression. The unit also supports end-of-life and palliative care when appropriate. In addition to oncology-focused care, nurses manage a range of medical-surgical diagnoses, requiring a broad clinical skill set. Additionally, we are a Bariatric Center of Excellence, and this unit will serve the majority of our bariatric patients returning from surgery. There is a very small element of Oncology to this unit. However, this is by no means a major patient population for this floor. If we do have Oncology patients on this floor, we typically do not manage chemotherapy. Ideal patient ratio: 5:1; Max, 6:1
