Description
Job Summary
The Cat Scan Technologist performs computer tomography procedures and related techniques, producing sectional and three-dimensional images for interpretation. The technologist also assists with interventional and therapeutic procedures.
Essential Job Functions
- Perform complex CT procedures with a high level of professionalism.
- Utilize professional judgment to review and obtain patients' clinical histories for procedures, ensuring accurate documentation in the PACS system.
- Prepare, screen, and verify the accuracy of contrast questionnaires with patients or family members, documenting in the EPIC system.
- Identify and administer contrast media related to CT exams as prescribed by licensed practitioners.
- Review patient prescriptions for exam appropriateness; communicate with radiologists and referring physicians if clarification is needed.
- Verify insurance authorization for exam scripts and coordinate with the finance department for re-verification, if necessary.
- Obtain outside studies and schedule them in the EPIC system to ensure availability for radiologists comparison.
- Provide exam copies to patients and requesting physicians or family members.
- Evaluate radiographs using the PACS system to ensure proper identification and diagnostic value.
- Gather relevant patient information from medical records and healthcare providers to prepare scanning protocols with an emphasis on patient safety.
- Determine patient preparedness for procedures, including necessary pre-scanning measures such as shielding and immobilization.
- Administer appropriate types and doses of contrast media.
- Provide clear explanations and instructions to patients at a level they can understand, addressing any questions or concerns during the procedure.
- Perform venipuncture, IV patency checks, and maintenance procedures according to established guidelines.
- Monitor patients for any adverse reactions during the procedure.
- Commit to scheduled shifts, including holidays and weekends, and work overtime as needed to ensure quality patient care.
- Lift, push, or pull a minimum of 25 lbs. and 50 lbs. respectively, while standing for a minimum of 6 hours per day.
- Identify and address the needs of diverse patient populations, adapting care to specific needs such as age, culture, and language.
- Adhere to organizational competencies and standards of behavior as outlined by the institution.
Required Skills & Experience
- Strong knowledge of human anatomy, physiology, and radiological positioning.
- Familiarity with CT software and hardware.
- Thorough understanding of the PACS system.
- Maintain continuing education unit (CEU) credits.
- Achieve ARRT (CT) certification within twelve months of hire.
- Obtain American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification within three months of hire.
Preferred Skills & Experience
- Six months of CT experience is preferred.
- Knowledge of Epic and any additional HIS/RIS systems integrated by the organization.
Work Schedule
Position requires working nights from 11:00 PM to 7:30 AM, Sunday through Thursday, in five 8-hour shifts. Holidays are required. There is no on-call obligation.
Education
- Required: Graduate of a Radiologic Technologist program and a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Preferred: None specified.
Certifications & Licensure
- Required: NJ DEP Diagnostic Radiography License, ARRT Certified R.T.(R) license, and American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Certification.
- Preferred: ARRT certified R.T. (CT) license.
