Description
Registered Nurse - PCU (Progressive Care Unit)
Location: Lafayette, Indiana
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Job Overview
- Work on a mixed acuity unit caring for medical patients with some PCU level of care patients.
- Unit includes oncology, stroke, cardiac, gastrointestinal, and pulmonary patients.
- Patient ratios: MS patients 1:5-6, PCU patients 1:3-4.
- Care involves managing unstable strokes, BiPAP, and drips such as cardizem, amiodarone, and insulin.
- Must have solid neurological nursing experience.
- Accepting RNs with experience in MS/Telemetry or PCU.
- Shift: Night shift, 4 shifts per week, 12 hours each (6:30 PM to 6:30 AM).
Required Certifications
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- BLS (Basic Life Support) - AHA or RQI accepted
- NIH Stroke Certification (required for stroke unit)
Licensure
- Must have an Indiana state RN license, compact license, or Indiana temporary license in hand prior to start.
- Pending licenses accepted if valid prior to start.
Requirements/Qualifications
- Valid RN license in Indiana
- Minimum of 1 year of Progressive Care Unit (PCU) experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing (ASN) or Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)
- Solid neuro/neurology nursing experience
Facility & Work Environment
- Short-Term Acute Care facility with 194 staffed beds.
- Charting system: Cerner.
- Free parking available.
- Dress code: red scrub tops and black bottoms.
Compliance & Documentation Requirements
- Valid Driver’s License or Passport (clear copy).
- Background checks including 7-year work/lived history, SSN trace, criminal, sex offender, and education verification.
- EPLS/GSA/SAM and HHS/OIG checks required within 30 days of start.
- Official transcript or diploma required (may be pending at start).
- Medication/Pharmacology competency exam and unit competency exam required.
- Color blind testing (Ishihara exam or equivalent) required with 100% minimum score.
- Physical exam within 12 months of start.
- Fit mask test within 12 months with approved respirators (N95 models specified).
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 12 months.
- Immunizations and titers required:
- Rubeola (Measles)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (series, titer, or signed declination)
- Tetanus/Diphtheria/Tdap (strongly recommended)
- TB test (PPD, QuantiFERON-TB Gold, or T-SPOT) within 1 year of start; chest x-ray if positive history.
- Flu vaccination or approved medical/religious exemption required for flu season (9/30 - 3/31). Declinations not accepted.
- References: minimum 2 from recent employment with supervisory titles, verified within 2 years.
- Current employment application with full work history and explanations for gaps over 30 days.
- Skills checklist completed within 12 months and annually.
Additional Notes
- Locals are not accepted for this position.
- Indiana RN travelers (except Periop/OR and Allied/Ambulatory RN travelers) will not be allowed to work past 11/30/24 at this facility.
- Periop includes ENDO, IR RN, PACU, Cath Lab RN, SDS and are exempt from this restriction.
This position is ideal for experienced neuro or PCU RNs comfortable with mixed acuity and progressive care patients, including oncology and stroke care, working night shifts in a short-term acute care setting.
