Description
Job Opportunity: Registered Nurse - PCU
Location: Winston Salem, North Carolina
Employment Type: Travel/Contract
Contract Length: 13 weeks
Shift: Night (3 shifts of 12 hours each, 18:45 - 7:15)
Hours per Week: 36
Unit & Patient Population Details
- Mixed acuity unit with PCU and Med-Surg/Telemetry patients
- Target nurse-to-patient ratio: 1:4-5; may go to 1:6 in extreme situations
- 48-bed unit with a CNA ratio of 9-10:1
- Patient population includes COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, acute respiratory failure, chest tubes, CPAP/BiPAP, and telemetry monitoring
- Ventilator patients are chronic trach/vent; nurses care for no more than one vent patient at a time
- COVID-19 patients currently included in the patient population
- Unit resources: Admission/Discharge nurse, Assistant Nurse Manager, Vascular Access Team, Respiratory Therapists, Rapid Response Team, Code Team, Behavioral Health Team
Required Qualifications
- Valid RN license in North Carolina
- Minimum 2 years of experience in PCU - Progressive Care Unit, with PCU experience within the last year
- Associate of Science in Nursing / Associate Degree in Nursing
- ACLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- BLS certification issued by American Heart Association or American Red Cross
- Experience with ventilator care
- Experience managing CPAP/BiPAP
- Skilled in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
Preferred Qualifications
- NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
Scheduling & Work Requirements
- 12-hour night shifts
- 36 hours per week (typically 3 shifts)
- Float to like units required
- Weekend shifts: minimum 4 weekends in 6 weeks, may require more based on staffing needs
- Block scheduling accommodation possible based on unit needs
- Orientation: 24 hours
Special Procedures & Equipment
- Care for patients with chest tubes
- Medication drips including dopamine, Cardizem, and heparin
- Use of vents, trachs, CPAPs, and BiPAPs
- Unit systems: Pyxis, EPIC, SBAR
Health & Compliance Requirements
- Physical exam within 1 year of start (or within 30 days if past positive TB)
- Fit testing required (N95 or PAPR training accepted; PAPR not accepted at Ashe Memorial)
- Negative TB test or chest x-ray per protocol
- Required immunizations or titers with no declinations accepted for:
- Measles (Rubeola)
- Mumps
- Rubella
- Varicella
- Hepatitis B (facility-specific declination form required if titer negative/equivocal)
- Seasonal flu vaccine or approved medical/religious exemption required during flu season (9/1 - 10/31)
- Negative 10-panel drug screen within 30 days of start
- Background checks including local, federal, national criminal, sex offender, education verification, and state-specific registry searches within 90 days of start
Orientation & Onboarding
- Must complete Non-Novant Health Worker Orientation (8-10 hours for acute care)
- Must complete annual compliance and medication safety training
- Must complete facility-specific confidentiality agreement and hospital policies acknowledgment
- Photo for badge required (passport style, white background, business attire)
- Corp ID process: candidates must set up Novant Health account and log into I-Learn within 24 hours of receiving email instructions
Additional Notes
- No Return to Office (RTO) after booking allowed onsite; excessive call-offs or RTO may result in cancellation
- Unit acuity is high; team lead and assistant nurse manager present on all shifts including weekends
- References: 2 professional references within 3 years required for travel and acute care candidates
- Performance evaluation required if worked with Aya Healthcare over 1 year (updated annually)
